Death of Wesley Ellis.

Superintendent S. A. Ellis sends us the following notice of the death of his father, who was well known by many citizens about Nunda when he had what was known as Swains' grist mill:
Wesley Ellis, whose death Nov. 20, has been noticed, was born in Seneca county, N. Y., May 10, 1810, where a portion of his boyhood was passed. subsequently his parents removed to Tyrone, Steuben Co, where he was married to Eliza King, Nov. 10, 1828. He was a practical miller by trade and pursued that business successfully at Starkey and Bellona, Yates county, at Nunda, Livingston county, and at Canaseraga, Allegany county. He gave up the milling business and removed to Michigan Oct. 11, 1853, locating in Easton, Iona county, where he lived on a farm from 1854 to 1873. Several years since he exchanged his farm for a place two and a half miles north of Iona city, where he lived until his death. In March last, his wife of more than half a century, was called to her reward. He now has followed her after the lapse of but a few months. Of the children, two prececeded them, three others are still living: S. A. Ellis, of Rochester, N. Y., Mrs. Joseph Norris, of Lakeview, Mich., and Mrs. Rachel Hill, of Princeton, Minn. Mr. Ellis was a good citizen and neighbor, quiet and n__stentations in his life, modest and unassuming. He was much respected while he lived, and died regretted by all who knew him.

Surnames: Ellis Lockwood Sunderlin
This isn't exactly genealogical information, but may provide clues... I have copies of deeds for Tyrone NY Grist Mill, from Lazarus W. Ellis to Leonard Lockwood and Levi W Ellis (of Starkey, Yates County)- dated 1838, and from both Lockwood and Levi W Ellis to Eli Sunderlin - dated 1839. These are prints from microfilms of Steuben County deeds, transcribed to Schuyler County, with reference to Steuben liber & page numbers. Also notes Lazarus Ellis' wife as Esther Ellis.
It would appear that Lazarus Ellis was in some financial difficulty, and his son was helping him to get money to pay back loans/mortgages, etc. The deeds from Lockwood & Ellis to Sunderlin show dollar amounts of $5,666.66 and $5,333.33, (total $10,999.99) with a disclaimer that "This conveyance is not to effect or _[imperil? hard to read]_ the claim of the parties of the first part upon the policy of insurance upon the mills lately destroyed by fire upon the said premises Expected to them by the Hartford Fire Insurance Company." There may also be newspaper articles about that...

Would Levi W. Ellis of Starkey, Yates County, possibly be Wesley Ellis?

The deed copies are not digitized, I have photocopies from the microfilm, could copy & mail to you, if you're interested. There may also be other Ellis deeds in Schuyler and Yates Counties... My e-mail is mlaarons "at" yahoo.com, if that is better than message board.

Hello, and thank you for your message.

There are several men with the name of Levi Ellis, even within close relation to Wesley. Wesley's father, Lazarus Ellis, was the son of Levi Ellis. Lazarus had a brother, Levi Ellis who married Martha Finch, I believe.

Lazarus Ellis had son named Levi Ellis, though I believe it was Levi S. Ellis, who married Miriam Hedge.

Lazarus Ellis had a brother, William Ellis (wf Jemima Marie or Maria Fenton), who had sons Levi W. Ellis and Lazarus Ellis.

Milling was a tradition within portions of the Ellis family, and they seemed to live in high numbers in the same area.

I do not know if Wesley had a middle name. I've never seen it on any document, but it is an interesting suggestion.

I may take you up on your offer via e-mail, sometime soon.

Thank you, again!
