I am trying to find out information on my grandfather, Ezekial Leo Strunk born in Scott Co. Tn. I don't have a DOB but it must have been late 1800's or early 1900's. My mother who is Viola Doreen Strunk Wilmot was born in Sunbright, Tn. We would really like to have some info. on her father, my grandfather. I believe he died when she was fairly young. She is 74 years of age now. Please e-mail with anything that you think might be helpful to us. Thanks!

Generation No. 2

2. Gideon STRUNK, born January 1864 in Whitley Co KY; died February 1937 in Scott Co TN. He was the son of 4. Abraham STRUNK and 5. Susanah YANCEY. He married 3. Martha Jane JENKINS March 24, 1884 in Scott Co TN.
3. Martha Jane JENKINS, born March 1867 in Georgia; died February 18, 1936 in Scott Co TN. She was the daughter of 6. Isaac JENKINS and 7. ? Phillips.

Notes for Gideon STRUNK:
Gideon was a strict disciplinarian. He has also been described as a jolly man, who was always joking.

When living on Little Creek, Gideon had a small coal mine on the property. He would mine coal to be used in heating the house. He also set up a grist mill. He raised his own vegetables, and keep bee hives for honey.

From the Scott County News, Nov. 13, 1964; Profile of LC Phillips, grandson of Gideon. Written by Esther Sharp Sanderson for the Scott County News

"There was always a spirit of fun and optimism in the Gideon Strunk family. Many people had been caught on the receiving end of Mr. Strunk's practical jokes, but the worm was bound to turn at last. LC's father, Iowa Phillips, and a cousin, Bill Riley Phillips, were courting two of the Strunk girls, Laura and Josie. One morning breakfast seemed later than usual, and Gid went into the kitchen to find out what was the matter. The girls were missing. They had slipped off during the night and got married to the Phillips suitors. After stomping around from "pillar to post" and swearing in all known languages and possibly some dialects, Gid ended up saying to his perturbed wife, "Martha, those doggone Phillipses and the red-nose running briars are just taking this county."

Paint Rock Church
"Martha Strunk, wife of Gideon Strunk, joined the Paint Rock Baptist Church by experience and baptism in 1887. She departed this life February 18, 1936. In her death Paint Rock Church lost one of its best members, the aged husband a true companion, the children a pious mother. Her Husband and most of her children claim a hope in Christ, but some are still in the world. Though her tongue is silent, may her prayers be answered and may all prepare to meet our sister in glory, where there is no doubt she has gone. Our loss is her eternal gain."

General always had a bit of wanderlust. He was a dreamer, always looking for the greener grass. About 1935, General packed up the family and moved to Colorado. He lived there for a few years, moving around frequently. His youngest daughter, Mary, reports that she attended six different schools in first grade. While living in Colorado, he managed a coal mine, and worked in the timber industry.

Notes for Rosa B BOND:
Rosa had a variety of talents. She could make a dress by looking at a picture of the style. She could tat her own lace after looking at a sample. She was an excellent cook. She is described as a kind and gentle woman.

Obituary from the West Union Association United Baptists' Minutes, Paint Rock Church
"Rosa Strunk came to our church by letter of recommendation in December 1925 and she was a good and faithful member until death overtook her in a car wreck, December 23, 1927. She leaves a husband and 8 children to mourn her absence. We believe our loss is her eternal gain."

Rosa was on her way home from Christmas shopping in Oneida when the car went off the road between Helenwood and Huntsville. Loy Strunk was driving. At the time of her death, she was about 4 months pregnant.

Wife of General Strunk Killed and Others Injured

Last Saturday afternoon about two miles south of Oneida the car in which Loy Strunk, driver; Mrs. Strunk, wife of General Strunk; Shelby Strunk, Tax Assessor; Eugene McDonald, U.T. Student and son of Frazier McDonald; and Sam Harness were returning to Huntsville after shopping in Oneida for Christmas, ran over an embankment hurling the car with its occupants fifteen to twenty feet down a rocky precipice, killing Mrs. Strunk and injuring other occupants of the car. Mrs. Strunk and some of the party were pinned under the overturned car. Harness and Shelby Strunk were rather seriously injured. It seems that Loy Strunk, driver of the car, escaped unhurt. Mr. and Mrs Geo. T. Webb, of Helenwood came up soon after the accident and rushed Mrs. Strunk here to the office of Dr. Tom Phillips where she died a few minutes after, being removed to the undertaking parlor of Fred M. Leavitt where the body was prepared for burial. The accident seems to have been caused by a blow out on one of the left tires, causing the wheel to give way and the driver failing to get the car under control plunged over the embankment. General Strunk was in Williamson, West Va., where he has been working and did not get home until Tuesday night after the death of his wife. Mr. and Mrs. Strunk resided near Huntsville and have a large number of relatives in that, and other parts of the county. Besides her husband, she leaves a large family of eight or nine children, most of them being small. Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at eleven o'clock with Rev. H.A. Phillips officiating. The large crowd at the funeral attested the high esteem in which Mrs. Strunk was held by the people of the community.

Dear Ms. Strunk,

Thank you so much for your reply. I have read your reply to my Mother and she thinks that this may be her Father. She was told by her Mother, Gladys Phillips (Grizelda Geneva Phillips), that her Father died when she was only 8 or 9 months old. However, there are several similarities that make her think this could be her Father. He was a world war 1 veteran and some other things that make her think this may be him. It could be possible that her Mother told her that he died just to make things easier on her.

Do you know of a previous marriage of Ezekiel Leo Strunk or any clue of a relationship with a Geneva Phillips. My Mother has an old Bible that was given to her Mother in 1924(approx)
by Ezekiel Leo Strunk. My Mother was born in Sunbright in 1928 and her name is Viola Doreen Strunk Wilmot. I have tried to search the Marriage Records and am not finding anything. I'd appreciate any more information that you might have and thanks again for your reply. This is such a mystery to us and we would love to know anything we can find out.

Sincerely,

Suzanne Wallace Portwood
