Gayle: I don't know if this helps you or not. However, I found the ancestry.com tree on your Wm. Caswell Hicks which stated he had been born in Whitley Co. KY...did a search in the census index and found the following:

HICKS, THOMAS
State: KY Year: 1870
County: Whitley County Record Type: Federal Population Schedule
Township: Boston Pct. Page: 301
Database: KY 1870 Federal Census Index

The info was: HH35/35

Hicks, Thomas age 40 W M farmer b. TN
", Jane age 40 W F keeping house b. TN
", Susan, age 19? W F --- b. TN
", W. C. , age 15, W M works on farm b. KY

In the 1860 Campbell Co. Census I found:4th Civil District
June 1, 1860 Jacksboro, Tennessee

14-14
HICKS, Ths. 30 M Farmer 10 TN
HICKS, Jane 30 F TN
HICKS, Susan 9 F TN
HICKS, Wm. C 5 M TN

There is a birth record at LDS for a Thomas Hicks b. 1830 to a James Hicks and Esther Hicks. So I looked for James and Esther Hicks in 1860: 12th Civil District July 25, 1860 Jacksboro, Tennessee

923-912
HICKS, James 55 M Farmer 100 TN 13
HICKS, Esther 53 F TN 13
HICKS, James 18 M TN
HICKS, Sarah 16 F TN
HICKS, Nancey 14 F TN
HICKS, William 12 M TN

924-913
HICKS, Nathaniel 25 M Farmer 30 TN
HICKS, Nancy 25 F TN
HICKS, James 3 M TN

In the 1850 Campbell Census I found:

778 778 Hicks, James 47 m Farmer NC X
778 778 Hicks, Esther 43 f TN X
778 778 Hicks, Thomas 20 m None TN
778 778 Hicks, Nathaniel 17 m Farmer TN X
778 778 Hicks, Melinda 14 f TN X
778 778 Hicks, John 11 m TN X
778 778 Hicks, James 7 m TN X
778 778 Hicks, Sarah 5 f TN
778 778 Hicks, Catharine 3 f TN

James and Esther cannot read or write, there's nothing for Thomas and the others are attending school.

In the 1880 Campbell Co. census:

Page 7 district 10 line 60:

Hicks, Thomas age 50,
", Jane, age 50 (Tn, Nc, Nc)
", Susan age 29 (divorced)
Mary Bell age 7 (g. dau) (ky ky tn)
John W. age 3 (g son)(ky ky tn)
Nancy J. 3/12 (b. Mar g-dau) (tn nc tn)

Not too far from this Thomas HIcks in 1880 was:
page 6 district 10 line 48
Hicks, Caswell age 24 (ky tn tn)
", Rachel age 23
", Eliza J. age 1

This Rachel, I believe, was the daughter of Samuel P. Douglas and Leah Campbell (I also have a Rachel Douglas in my tree, daughter of William A. Douglas and Elizabeth Broyles and she was born in 1858!).

I tried finding James and Esther Hicks in 1870 Campbell and they aren't there. I also checked the indexes for Whitley KY and Thomas Hicks was the only one listed. There was a curious index listing for a James Hicks in Harlan Co. 1870 page 75 Berry's District BUT ANCESTRY.COM doesn't seem to have that page (it stops at page 63 in their images). This Harlan Co. James Hicks doesnot appear in the 1860 Harlan Co. index either so this might be something to keep in mind.

Anyway, James Hicks is still alive in 1880 *I think it's him*:

Page 2 District 4 line 19:

Hicks, J. age 77 (nc nc sc); E. age 73 (wife) (scrofula) (Tn Va Nc); C. 33 (dau), M. J. 14 (dau) (KY), E. A. 11 (dau) (ky)

In the 1900 Census of Campbell I found your Wm. Caswell Hicks in the District 10. I also have MY Thomas Hicks (father to George David who had married my Wright) in the same district 10. AND I found the following in district 10:

HH 157
Hicks, Thomas head W M May 1830 70 yrs old Widow Tn Nc TN day laborer

I hope this helps...if you should have any information on the parents of a Thomas Alexander Hicks b. Dec 15, 1852 and d. Aug 1, 1917 in Campbell Co. TN I'd sure appreciate it! (this is my line of research *lol* too many Hicks in Campbell that's for sure!)

I have just come across this while searching my family tree. I am the granddaughter of SAMUEL P. HICKS. He and my grandmother, Gertie (later Gertrude) Lindsey Hicks, had 3 children: Geneva Lee Hicks, Edward Franklin Hicks and Samuel Eugene Hicks (my father). He and my grandmother divorced in the 1940's and he married a woman named China and had another son, but I'm not sure if his name was Kenny or Kenneth. They moved to Peoria, IL in the late 40's/early 50's and lived there until they died, I believe in the 80's. My grandmother told me a little about my grandfather's brothers and father, and if I'm not mistaken, I believe she said the girls died when the were young women.
