Bouwens from Groede to Rochester, NY

Surnames: Bouwens, Bowens, Bowen
I am searching for information on the surname Bouwens that immigrated from Groede, Zeeland in 1857 to the United States. My Great Great Grandfather was Isaac Bowen, however the record from Castle Garden puts his name as Adriaan Bouwens born 1851. The Castle Garden records also say his father and mother were Adriaan and Abigail. There was a son Marinus and daughter Francina as well. They settled in Rochester and after the death of the parents in the 1860s, Isaac stayed in the Rochester, NY area and his brother Marinus/Morris moved around Canadaigua and Wayne Counties.

I am pretty sure I found a match in Genlias and since it was super easy to find you are probably not familiar with the dutch genealogical database:

http://www.genlias.nl/en/page0.jsp

It is a pretty good national database but it isn't complete, if you are having difficulty finding something be sure to check "what is in genlias" to see if the records are available.

to get you started from genlias:

Source Civil register - Marriage
Archive location Zeeuws Archief
General Number of finding aid: 25.40
Municipality: Groede
Type of record: Huwelijksakte
Record number: 10
Registration date: 02-06-1847
Groom Adriaan Bouwens
Age: 30
Place of birth: Nieuwvliet
Bride Abigail Klaijzen
Age: 30
Place of birth: Aardenburg
Father groom Adriaan Bouwens
Mother groom Francina Smoor
Father bride Izak Klaijzen
Mother bride Tannetje van Overbeke

I checked your online tree, I noticed you entered the married name for Abigail, that's a bit of a genealogical nono. Only enter maiden names, best to leave things blank if you don't know, but now you do. :)

There is a wealth more out there many sites have scans available of the original records. We'll be glad to help with the translation.

For scans of the civil registry (1811-1950) be sure to check out:

https://www.familysearch.org/s/image/show#uri=http%3A//pilot...

They are not indexed, so it is usually easier to find the record in genlias to get the exact date and then search for the original record.

Can't thank you enough. Thanks for the information. I am new to researching Dutch families outside of the United States and this is the first time I have tried to link back to Europe.

Hi, Matt. We live in the Rochester area where my husband's grandparents lived. His great-grandparents were Johannes Kooman and Sara Bouwens who came from Oostburg in Zeeland. They lived in the Williamson NY area and were farmers. I think you may be related to my husband.....very distantly!

If you want to confirm name of Isaak, as I looked up and there were about 5 or 6. Did notice name of parents Adriaan etc. did change.
Try Ancestors. NL, the gentleman Ton van Heusden was very helpful in my search for my GGG grandparents, also from Groede. They also migrated to Wayne Co.
Good Luck
