I am looking for the birth of Wiliam Wood born Orpington, Kent about 1823. He married Caroline, surname unknown, but it may have been Wood also, about 1848/1849. According to the 1851 Census William and Caroline Woods with children Elizabeth 2 and Caroline 1 were living in Thundridge, Herts.
Caroline was born in Merton, Surrey. Would appreciate any information.
Family Search has a baptism in Orpington, 8 December 1822 - Wm Wood, parents John + Harriet
Might be one to investigate anyway.
Re the marriage to Caroline. Nothing obvious leaps out, not in the likely places. But Caroline died in Devon? In Newton Abbot district, registered in March qtr 1891, just before the census in which William was widower.
Age was 72, so if accurate she was born around 1818 or maybe early 1819
There's a Caroline Freeborn baptised 8 February 1818 in Merton. Parents Thomas + Hannah.
It looks as if they might then have come up to the Streatham/Clapham area and Caroline appears to be in Clapham in 1841 with mother Hannah and some younger siblings
The thing is, there seem to be only a very few people called Caroline Freeborn, and mainly connect to Surrey
Can see no marriage for this Caroline in the London area, even though she is in Clapham in 1841.
But in 1847 in Wordsley in the Midlands, at Holy Trinity church, a William Wood did marry a Caroline Freeborn! (Registered Dec 1847 Stourbridge, and see also West Midlands BMD where she is the only Freeborn marriage!)
Seems unlikely, but they did move around somewhat later, so you never know.
Birth certificate of one of the children will give the mother's maiden name of course and should enable you to confirm the right marriage.
Thank you John for the information re William and Caroline Wood. I will apply for the birth certificate for their eldest child Elizabeth Jane. I do appreciate your time spent searching on my behalf.
I am looking for information on William Wood. I have information that he was born about 1822 in the UK and died December 20, 1905. I also have that he was buried at Ford End, Chelmsford.
I believe that he had 5 children, William Thomas Wood ( my great grandfather), Edgar Wood, Carrie Wood ( possibly born in September 1849), Jack Wood and Charlie Wood.
William Thomas Wood moved to the United States and lived in Pass Christian, MS. He married Matilda A. Bohn, January 12, 1897 and died February 29, 1916. He had three sons, William, Guy and Charlie.
The information below came from letters written to Matilda Wood from Charlie Wood and his wife Annie.
Charlie Wood was married to Annie E. and they lived at 9, Kellerton Road,Lee, SE. 13., London, England. They had no children. Charlie worked for the post office.
Edgar had two daughters, Marjorie, the oldest daughter, and Ethel. He also had a son Edgar. I believe that Edgar (the father) lived in Devon. At some point Marjorie and Ethel moved to New Zealand. I believe that Marjorie was married in September 1935. Son Edgar was wounded in WWI. In 1920 Edgar's (the father) widow lived in Dartmouth, I am not sure how long she lived there or if that was just a temporary residence.
Carrie married to Fred Crow, and had a son Will. Will Crow, Carrie's son, was married and had a son and daughter. I have that Will Crow lived in Essex in the 1930's. His kids were 12 and 6 years old in 1933.
Jack Wood was married to Bessie. From a letter that I have I believe that he died in Plymouth.
The William Wood I have was born about 1822 at Orpington, Kent. He married Caroline M.S. Unknown. They had a family of 8 - Elizabeth Jane, Caroline, George Henry, William E who died as a infant, William Thomas, John James, Edgar Isaac and Charles. My William Wood, the father, lived in England all of his life. However, I will check to see if the William Thomas Wood I have ( born June Quarter 1855 at Thundridge, Hertfordshire) did immigrate to U.S.A as I have been unable to trace him in England. Will let you know.
My Edgar Isaac Wood married Annie Holwill and they had three children, Edgar William J., Marjorie Edith and Ethel May. I have the birth certificate of Marjorie Edith confirming the parents and I have them as a family 1911 Census. Marjorie emigrated to New Zealand in 1923. Ethel also immigrated to New Zealand. Their brother Edgar was 12 in 1911 so it wasn't he who was wounded in WW1
John James Wood, who you mention as Jack Wood, lived in Exeter, Devon and married Elizabeth Salter. He was born in Coggeshall, Essex June Quarter 1857, and was in the Police Force mainly in the Exeter area.
The information I have has been taken from Census returns and from Familysearch UK and FreebmdUK.
I think your William Thomas Wood may be connected to the Wood Family I am searching, but I will confirm that after I receive further information from a friend in England who is helping me.
Would you kindly let me know if you know when or have any idea when your William Thomas Wood immigrated to the USA. I understand from your email that he married Matilda A. Bohn in USA. Is that correct?
Thank you so much for the newsy letters from Charles and Annie Wood, whose Maiden Name was Annie Eliza Spratt. Is Lillie the name Matilda was known as?
We are definitely searching the same family. I have gone back to 1788/1790 and, when I have finished, I can send you a copy of Wood Family History which I have, but would prefer to send to your direct email address. Hope you received my email giving you my email addres and advising you I can put you in contact with the daughter of Marjorie Edith Wood who immigrated to New Zealand.
Do you have access to Immigration Records into USA? Might be able to find when William T. arrived in USA.
I would appreciate if you could give me the following information if you have it available.
Death of William Thomas Wood, when and where and the full names of his children and when and where they were born and any other information you have about this family.
I have tried several times to locate immigration information for William Thomas Wood but have met with no success.
Matilda A. Bohn is also known as Lillie.
As far as my email address the first part is "woodb"

I have just received the birth certificate for Elizabeth Jane Wood and her mother was Caroline Freeborn, so you were correct with your search. This family certainly moved quite often. I have found the family of John Wood and Harriet, parents of William Wood, but I have been unable to find the marriage of John and Harriet.
Thank you for your original research on my behalf.
