Hi all

I am trying to locate any info on the 'Oakes' family, specifically Douglas Cosby Oakes and wife Helen Jessie Oakes & family who resided on the 'Maylands' property in Muttaburra in the mid 1930's and onwards.

The QLD electoral rolls show the Oakes family as being at this location. Douglas Cosby's father is a Douglas Champ Oakes who resided in the Macleay River in NSW.

The 'Oakes' family had farms/land in the Macleay River when Douglas Cosby would have been growing up. Douglas Cosby has 2 other brothers; Douglas Sholto Oakes and Norman leslie Oakes.

I am trying to find any info about Douglas Cosby Oakes & his family and their lives within this region.

Any help or info would be so greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Do a search of newspapers on the National Library of Australia newspaper digitisation site (nla.gov.au and select the newspaper digitisation tab on the bottom right hand corner of the web page. A search for Muttaburra and Oakes brings up a reference to an article in the Courier Mail of sept 1933 about the sale of Maylands from Mr AED Smith to Mr DC Oakes, late of Curragh.

I have just returned from 2 weeks at Maylands and came across your question whilst doing a search. As far as i know it has been in the Ahern family since at least 1940. The visitor book has John Laws there shooting in 1953! I will ask the current owner if he knows of the Oakes

Hi Rosemary

Thanks for your reply.

Due to work etc its probably easier to get my via email.

My email is kirsty37@hotmail.com

From what info I have uncovered Douglas Champ Oakes appears to be linked to my family through my Great Great Grandmother Eveline Shaw/Dunn.
