Read your messages. Looking for ancestors pertinent to Sebastian Buster Campise. He is my father in law. His father was Bennidito Campise. Came to U.S. during the late1800's. Landed in Ellis Island, could be a name change, but don't think so. Looking for any information on ancestors of Bennidito Campise or Antonia Latona (Alolont)Also looking for information on Florence Saccio and or Anthony Lafata and or Josephine Corsel. Campisi is found throughout Italy. Some changed it to Campise after having migrated to the US through New Orleans. Those who came through Ellis Island usually kept it at Campisi.
Have seen Campiz in Spain and Greece at some point in the past. However, perhaps it got changed to this after a family moved from Italy to the US.
My particular family originated in Poggioreale,Sicily but as indicated earlier the surname is seen throughout Italy.
The name itself means "one who dwells near the field".

Hope this proves helpful or at least interesting.

my grandfather migrated from Sicily to the US somewhere around the turn of the 20th Cenntury through Ellis Island. at that time he also changed the spelling of our family name from Campisi to Campise...he initially lived in Brooklyn and met my grandmother who migrated from Northern Italy...they married and moved to Queens to raise a family...we are fairly certain that at least one of my grandfather's several brothers moved to New Jersey, a few headed south and another to far as we know they all lost touch once in the U.S.A.

Dear Joey,
I'm not sure this is the same Campise family you are looking for although, I think we are all related. My Father and mother came from Italy along with their parents. Pop came from Sicily and Mom came from Palermo. Both their parents came from the same places and resided in the United States until they passed. We have Annie and Bennito Campise, and Birdie and Anthony Laffata. We are descendants of Sebastian Campise and Lucille May Laffata. Please keep in touch as I would like to know if you are a direct descendant of ours, or maybe just someone looking for a distant relative. In either case, I would like to help you find whomever you are looking for . With Much Luck,

Sam Campise

My grandfather,Father and Brother were all named Joseph. The original spelling was Campisi. Grandfathe came from Caccamo,Sicily but many Campise's came from Cattolica,Sicily.
The Campise/Campisi name is very common in Sicily and means in the camp or of the land. Our family settled outside of Pgh. and were in the produce business.
Do you know what part of Sicily your family came from?
