I am looking for the Marr family who came from northern Scotland to Georgia. Marr
family has a castle in Scotland. They changed their surname to Marrs after arriving
in Georgia.
My grandfather was Albert Marrs in South Dakota.

Pat: I am from that branch of the family also. We are descended from an Archibald Marrs who married Deborah Guinn. They lived in Virginia and split up and emigrated to Michigan and down through the Cumberland Gap to Kentucky and Tennessee and points further south. A large family of Marrs lived in Giles Co. TN during the Civil War. All descended from the Earls of Mar who were stewards of the Castle of Edinburgh before Culloden and were ousted from Scotland during the Highland Clearings. The name was changed from Erskine, Earl of Mar to Marrs during the emigration. The name was also changed in Michigan from Marrs to Mars to reflect a Catholic-Protestant split. Mars being Catholid, Marrs being traditional Scotch Presbyterian. Contact me if you wish more.

I am descended from Hugh Marrs (Mairs) of Virginia and through his son James Marrs and Mary Houston. Have copy of bible page showing James "departed this life 16 Mar 1851 (or 1859)" also shows Mary Houston Marrs died 8 Nov 1840. Their son, Matthew Long Marrs married Elizabeth (?) and were in madison County Arkansas in 1850. Any connections? Lou Ann

I am also a decendent of Hugh Marrs through his daughter Kathryn Marrs. Kathryn was born in Wilkes County Georgia in 1784. I would appreciate any information that you have on this line of the Marrs Family.

Thanks in advance

Glad to hear from a Marrs cousin! I've been researching the family for over 25 years and just knew that I had ole Hugh approved so we could all be members of the DAR, however, proving his death has been my achilles (sp?) heel! Seems that there are at least 3 Hugh Mars that were in existance at the time of the death of our Hugh. Do you have any information - actual documentation - as to the date/place of his death? If I could just find a will naming his children, Catherine, Samuel, James, Alexander, we would have it made!!! I'm a member of DAR but through an ancestor on my mother's side. Do you have the Marrs and Allied Familes book? It was compiled by the "Four Sister" back in 1965. My father's mother gave him a copy and in turn he gave it to me.
I have information (not documentation) that Catherine, dau of Hugh, married her cousin Isaac Mars, son of Hugh's brother William, in Logan Co., Ky in 1802. The "Four Sisters" indicated that they found these records.Ctherine was living with her daughter Rosanna and Levi West in the 1860 census of Washington Co., Ark at Cane Hill. I may repeating information that you already have. If you would like more, let me know. Lou Ann
