My husband's family is the Brillas. His father's side. His mother maiden name was Gustie. He says his father's family was Slovak, I am not sure about his mother. There were 5 Brillas all born in the same house in Cleveland, Ohio. I do not know right now my husbands paternal grandfather and grandmothers names. I will do more research. It is not a common name, so I believe this has to be the same brilla lineage since he was slovak. If you are still researching feel free to email me at meanmstreeter@yahoo.com.

My Grandfather Spirko immigrated to the United States and settled in Pennsylvania. His name was Louis Spirko. He was married to Mary Helen Zatkovitch and they had 5 children: AnnaMae, Irene, Helen Marie, Eleanor Cecilia and Emery Spirko. I believe my grandfather was born on September 30, 1887 in Kurov, Czechoslovakia. His wife was also from Czechoslovakia. They were married in the US. I know they visited relatives in the old country around 1927. Are we related?

Any Spirko's from Kurov will be related since it was not a large town. I did Spirko research years ago, so my memory is a little rusty on if I exhausted all of the records....
However, based on what I have so far:

Johannes Spirko, B. bef. 1800

Children: Stephanus and Anna

Stephanus, ~1815-2/18/1896
He married Anna Dubovecky, ~ 1823-3/22/1909

Their children: Maria, B. 1845, Anna, B. 1850 (married Johannes Mokriss); Petrus, B. 1853, Nicolaus, 1856-1858, Catherine, 1859-1888 (married Josef Brilla), Johannes, 1862-1945 (married Anna Bobak), Maria, 1865-1951 (married Josef Brilla), Theodorus, B. 1870.

When the Brilla's (Maria Spirko's husband & family) first came to the US, they went to Pennsylvania and were there for awhile before relocating to Wisconsin. Pennsylvania was a common place (as well as other places) for the newly arrived Slovaks. I have Slovak ancestors from outside of Bratislava who also settled in Pennsylvania. The names that I have read from replies to my original post do not ring a bell, but again all Spirko's are related. If you can get a copy of your earliest immigrant's marriage record here in the US or a parents' name from Kurov, it would help to make a connection...let's figure it out!

My Grandfather's sisters names were Theresa and Anna. We also have cousins that are some how related to my grandfather: Anna SPirko married Peter Blanar (Kurov, Slovakia)- John Blanar Spirko Sept 17, 1904?-1963?)married to Anna Babulic (Stara Tura, Slovakia) 12/13/1900. Daughters - Irene and Emilia Blanar. John Blanar ended up in Cuba because he was unable to get into the US. He got off on the next stop. My grandfather was born 8/30/1889 and died in Johnstown, PA on 6/30/1938. 2/12/1907 he emigrated from Bremen Germany. Around Aug. 1924 my grandmother Mary Helen Zatkovich Spirko (8/25/1892-6/1969) traveled to Europe to visit relatives. My grandmother's sisters names were Susanne Zatkovich married to Thomas Tokar/Tucker and ELizabeth Zatkovich (1884) married to Joseph Spisak (1877). My granmothers family owned some kind of flour mill. My grandfather was a coal miner and had a metal plate in his head from some mine explosion. They lived in E. Tayor, PA near Johnstown. Marriage License - Cambria County 66-2 Louis Spako and Mary Zratkovics 54-320.My Mother's name is Eleanor Cecilia Spirko Gellesand her other sisters names are AnnaMae Spirko Weaver, Helen Marie Spirko Grimes and Emery Louis Spirko. One daughter died at the age of two her name was Irene Kathleen SPirko. It would seem that families were large during that time period. ANother relative of my grandfather was Bunyack. My email address is mgelles@sbcglobal.net. Thanks for your help
