My wife, Mary Lee Chander Gordon, is from Blakely, Georgia, and says -- don't get me wrong, I believe her -- she is a directg descendant of Alexander Hamilton Stephens, VP of the Confederacy. I'd like more family info on Mr. Stephens, as much as someone can provide. Thanks very much!

I have been told over the years that my great-great grandfather, ________ Stephens (I'll have to find out his first name) was directly related to Alexander H. Stephens. I have heard over the years from my father. My gg grandfather had 20 children (he had become a Mormon). My great-grandfather was William Stephens (4 children), my grandfather was Raymond Elliot Stephens (2 children) and my father is Dean Stephens (4 children). Alexander H. Stephens never married or had children. He was either a cousin or uncle to my gg grandfather. I will find out for sure from my father as soon as I can.

My father says that V.P. of the Confederate States, Alexander H. Stephens was an uncle to my g-g-grandfather, Alexander Nephi Stephens, who left the southern states to join the Mormons in Illinois and then went to Utah with the Mormons. Vice President Stephens' nephew Alexander Nephi Stephens' first wife was Amina Briggs (my g-g-grandmother); his second wife might have been Sarah Gheen (not sure) and his third wife was Mary (will find out her maiden name soon). My g-grandfather's name was William Wallace Stephens (from A. Nephi Stephens' first wife). My g-grandfather was very close to a 1/2 brother, John Stephens. My father says that I am probably related to thousands of Stephens. The Stephens split up between Georgia, North Carolina (where my g-g-grandfather was born) and Louisiana. Alexander Hamilton Stephens was a statesman and a slave owner. He was a small man, and quite sickly (with asthma). He was imprisoned for a short time after the war, but continued to be involved in politics after getting out of prison. He wrote a book after the war giving his impressions of what caused the war, etc. I am just beginning my genealogy search. I'm looking forward to finding my thousands of relatives! Has much information about him. contact Martha Kate Downey mdo651@airmail.net We are trying to trace our family's history as they travelled from Tennesee and Georgia to Texas in about the 1870's we think.

My grandmother was a Stephens from Fayette Co
Ga. The church The Rock Baptist Church was
founded by the Stephens at the end of the 18th century and for several generations, the decendents were ministers there. The cemetary has dozens of plot and headstones for Stephens dating back to the early 1700's as the birth date. I hope this helps, let me know
