Elijah was my great, greatgrandfather. First married to Frances Seymour, then to Catherine Pomroy(?). Had a son Robert with 1st wife. He was in the War of 1812, He was Brevet Major. I would like to find out who his parents were, where he is buried or any other pertinent info. In 1830 census he was living in Niagara County, NY - he died in 1832.

I am writing a history of the Fort Niagara Lighthouse, of which Elijah Boardman was the keeper 1823-25 while he was the Commandant of Fort Niagara. He was transferred out in June of 1825. I am trying to find out why/how he was still in Porter (town where the Fort is) when he died, what he died of, etc. Also like to know why he remarried (if that is accurate) if his first wife did not die until after Elijah. Unusual in those days, especially for a military officer. Need to know anything I can find about his life leading up to his time at Niagara. I know there were at least 2 Elijah Boardmans that fought on the Niagara frontier in War of 1812, maybe 3 & am trying to separate histories & see if/where families connect. Thanks for any help. Sorry for the delay in answering your inquiry.Elijah was my gr gr grandfather. His first wife, Frances Seymour, died in 1829. They had two children. He then married Catherine Pomeroy in 1830. I do not know what he died of and I have been trying to find whee he is buried. I have more info on he and his family. His father, Elijah, is my Patriot for the DAR. Do you have a connection to the Boardman's?

Sorry, this thing should have emailed me when you answered my thread. Please use my direct email. devret1@live.com

I may have some distant marriage relationship thru a Boardman- Jewett connection, but my immediate interest & need for info asap is the book I am writing about Ft Niagara Lighthouse. Your gr gr grandfather was the lightkeeper as well as the fort Commandant from 11/8/1823 to 6/9/1825. He was shipped west at that point to fight in the Black Hawk Indian Wars. I need to know when & why he came back to Niagara. He is buried at the Fort's National Cemetery. He died of pleurisy, inflammation of the lungs, ie pneumonia. I need info on his kids and his second marriage - as much as you have. Was the Cornelia Boardman who married Lt Edgar Lacey at Ft Niagara on 5/21/1831 Elijah's daughter? I have an expert back in Wethersfield chasing info & she has not found the marriage connection to Pomeroy, altho Pomeroy is an extremely well established family there. I need as much info as you can provide of your gf's military career - at least where he served from-to what dates, what his rank was, what his prime responsibilities were & anything exceptional he had/happened to him. I am VERY VERY curious how he & family came to be at Ft Niagara after 1825, because the fort was officially closed as a military base from 1826-1841
Am very glad to make contact with you, & sure hope you can solve some of these mysteries for me, the folks in Rocky Hill and the folks at the Ft Niagara Museum.

Do you also have any info on the Elijah Boardman of approx same age as your gf, from Bennington VT who also served in War of 1812?

Yes, I am working on a reply. It will take me a little time to get all the information you want together. I have a question - where did you find that Elijah died of pleurisy, pneumonia. A few years ago I was in contact with Fort Niagara and they told me they did not know where he was buried. You say, he is buried at the Fort's National Cemetery, Is tha right at the fort?

Hi,
I have a researcher in CT who normally gets paid but is doing this work for me for free. I know we are supposed to post info on rootsweb from courtesy for all to share, but I am reluctant to post materials I've been given free for my book project from someone else who would normally have been paid for her work. That's not fair to her and would certainly ruin a research source for me.It actually has more info on his brother & parents than on him. (Also have people out in Wisconsin digging thru military & FreeMason records for me). I have info I will email me you separately or snail-mail you if you tell me how. My email is devret1@live.com. Perhaps the cemetery is not officially a "National" cemetery? But it sits right next to the lighthouse and was a part of a federal installation for almost 200 years, has only US military & military family personnel in it, so I assume its one of the hundreds of smaller national cemeteries that don't get any special recognition like those near/attached to major battlefields. Maybe its not. & no, I haven't checked burial records, etc, just took it from a small news clipping reporting his death. Its possible they transported him home to Hartford, but not likely & his family was living at the fort. Don't you have them remaining in that area? There are quite a few unmarked graves and mass graves at the small graveyard, marked by a couple of large group monuments. I believe its managed by the Old Fort Niagara Assn. Dave C
