Hello,
It looks like my grandfather was the only one who took the slash in the last letter and made it a T instead of an L.
I have sketchy information, and am looking for more.
Ellis Island records list one Piotr Zawol (my grandfather's name was Peter), but it is actually on a typewritten record of "detained aliens", with a code that I haven't been able to find. He was on the SS Amerika from Hamburg, is listed as Polish, and arrived in Dec. 1911. He appeared to be traveling alone.
There is no info on original province of origin.
Zawol does not appear to be a terribly common name; I wonder if anyone can shed any more light on this. Did all of the Zawols come from a particular area in Germany/Poland?
thanks.

I was able to trace the original manifest from the SS Amerika.
Piotr Zawol stated his origin as Polish/Austria, and came from Rozwadow, which I believe is in SE Poland.
Father's name was John Zawol, and Mother's name was Ewa Kochan.
Manifest states that he was headed for Hartford, I believe to meet a brother whose name I cannot make out, it appears to start with S ..maybe "Saspain" or something like that. Brother was also listed as being from Rozwadow.

I did realize that...when he came through ellis island it was either going to be a T or an L... I wonder who decided that. Interesting that more often it was taken as an L.
I don't have a lot of info on my grandfather's info...tho I've uncovered a bit more since I last visited this board. Last summer I went to Poland to meet my grandmother's relatives (near Poznan) ...so I have a lot of info on that branch of the family (only 3 more to go :)

Where did they settle in the United States?

I have a Agnes Zawol that married Frank Lyp.
Agnes and her sons:Josef,Jan and Frank arrived at Ellis Island in May, 1910.

Her husband was living with his sister Sophia Lyp and her
husband Joseph Laba in Chicago with a Mike Zawol in the
1910 Federal Census.

Thank You,
Colleen

Piotr Zawot (Zawol) originally went to CT, and then NJ. I believe he was met by a cousin or uncle when he got here. The other connection I know of was to a Strong family in CT though I am not sure of the relation.
