With the exact date do you have a copy of the birth record; if so does it give the father's occupation?

This was the time of the British Raj not the East India Company administration. If you have evidence he was actually employed by the EIC try them, otherwise try the India Office Library, they have a family history section, and/or Families in British India Society (FIBIS).

Halpark. Thank you for your reply.
According to all records that I have seen the British Raj came into being in 1858 when the East India Company was transferred to the crown(Queen Victoria)

Incorrect about the actual date, was speaking from memory. However if you have not tried the Company records, now held at the British Library, the India Office Library or FIBIS you could be missing something. If you have I do not think you will find much elsewhere if you cannot pin down where they came from.

Hi Jeff,Thanks for replying.I have just found out that there was no civil registration of births in India under British rule. There are baptism registers on microfilm in the British library.
William Thompson was a soldier.

Hi halpark,Thank you again for your reply.
I joined FIBIS.Found the birth date and baptism date of William J. Thompson.Asked a staff member(Fibis) re birth certs. There was no civil registration of births in India under British Rule.Microfilms of baptisms are at the British Library.
I do have a fair idea of where William came from and I think I found a marriage for him in India.
More researching to do.

Hope you get there. I know about no birth registration! I had a brother, have photo of him, only member of the family ever to have visited his grave - but he never existed. He was born in Aden which a kind person with a knowledge of history pointed out, was part of British India. After having to explain this to a rather snooty library assistant (no internet in those days) I was taken to a corner and told "That is all we have on Aden". In the back of my mind was my mother telling me he had been baptised a Roman Catholic, she was a Methodist. I started on records kept by the resident Catholic priest. When it was realised he was dying and would need burial, apparently this priest said he would not be able to conduct a service if the lad was not baptised. On one page Baptism: W. son of Mrs. B. and Captain B. (at sea). Next page Burials: W. son of Mrs. B. and Captain B. (at sea) - but according to record he had never been born! Good luck with your searches.
