Kemnitz written on the back of the card. Please respond back, we have been trying to find out more about our house and its history. Thank you.

Your farm may be the Kemnitz family homestead in Rosendale, WI. of August and Mary Kemnitz, my great, great, great grandparents. They are buried in Rosendale cemetery. Based on my research, I believe they arrived on 26 May 1857 in New York on a ship from Bremen, Germany with their three children. (Schoneberg, Germany is indicated as the place of origin.) The ship manifest indicates their names as F A Kemnitz, age 30 and M E Kemnitz, age 30; and their children's as C F Kemnitz, age 8; W Kemnitz, age 6; and F Kemnitz, age 1 1/4. They are--

Father: FREDERICK AUGUST KEMNITZ (1826 Ger.-1907 Eldorado WI)
Mother: MARIA (MARY) ELIZABETH FEITING (1826 Ger.-1906 Eldorado WI)
Son: CHARLES F KEMNITZ (1949 Ger.- ? ) with his wife Henrietta settled in Indianapolis, IN.
Son: FREDERICK WILHELM "WILLIAM" KEMNITZ (1851 Ger.-1931 Brown Co. SD) He married Louisa Liebenstein (1857-1919) in Sep 1878 and moved to Brown Co. So. Dakota in the early 1880's.
Son: FERDINAND FREDERICK KEMNITZ (1855 Ger.-1932 Columbia, SD) He married Mary Augusta Hohensee (1860-1942) in Dec. 1880 and they moved to Brown Co. So. Dakota in the early 1880's.

According to the 1900 census, August and Mary had 9 children, but only 7 are living at that time. I have found three, all born in Wisconsin:
Son: HEINRICH "HENRY" A KEMNITZ (1858 Lomira WI-1920 Milw. WI) He married Caroline Burgert (1861-1955) in July 1880. This is my great, great grandfather and grandmother. They also moved to Brown Co. So. Dakota in the early 1880's, but returned to Wisc. by 1900 and settled in Milwaukee.
Daughter: MARY A KEMNITZ (1860 Lomira, WI-1949 Stephenson Co. IL) married John G. Alt about 1886. They farmed in Eldorado, WI area before moving to Freeport & Lancaster, IL in the 1930's. Although the Alt's, too, must have also lived in So. Dakota in the 1880's, as their first two children, Lydia and Emma, were born there.
Son: JULIUS AUGUST KEMNITZ (1863 Rosendale WI-1948) married Maria A Roehl in June 1888. They settled in Oshkosh, WI. A June 15, 1938 Oshkosh Northwestern article about the golden wedding anniversary of Julius August & Maria indicates "Mr. Kemnitz is 75 and was born on a farm near Rosendale."

I would love to locate the Kemnitz farm and also know more about this family and their migrations to Wisconsin, Indiana and South Dakota, too.

Thank you. Gregg A Brauns, St. Paul, MN
