Here is another cabinet print from the photo album of Walter and Ellen GOBBITT of Oulton Broad, Suffolk (mentioned in my recent posting about Britannia Pier, Yarmouth). Dated August 1896, it was probably sent to them in Gibraltar, where Walter was serving with the Royal Engineers from late 1893 until 1898.

I'd appreciate some help to discover the surname(s) of the four young sitters, Reggie, Ruby, Irene and Kitty, who haven't leapt out (or even toddled) for me from FreeBMD or Ancestry (focusing on Norfolk, particularly Cromer's Erpingham registration district, and public family trees).

Avril LANSDELL indicates in her book, "History in Camera: Fashion à la Carte 1860 - 1900" (Shire Publications Ltd, 1985 / 1992, p. 38), that ankle-strap shoes were popular for infants throughout the 19th century and typically (at the end of the 1870s, anyway) worn by girls under 3 and boys under 2 years old.

That would make Reggie's birth later than July 1894, assuming that he is the curly-haired child on the left. I hope someone will be able to identify him or his companions.

Further research has revealed that Walter GOBBITT's wife Ellen (née HADINGHAM) was a once-removed cousin of the four children in her photograph, namely:

William Reginald ALLAN b. 5 Aug. 1893 (3 years old in Aug. 1896)
Ruby Evelyn ALLAN b. 18 Sept. 1895 (11 months)
Irene Hazelton PARISH b. 11 March 1895 (17 months)
Kathleen Muriel PARISH b. 15 Aug. 1893 (3 years)

Reggie (1893-c.1990) and Ruby (1895-1972; m. Wilfred LAISTER 1918) were born and baptized at Hillingdon, Middlesex, their parents being Archie Rockhill ALLAN (1866-1953) and Mary Ellen SMITH (c.1869-1941).

Irene (1895-c.1981) and Kathleen or Kitty (1893-1976) were daughters of Archie's sister Katie ALLAN (1869-1900) and John Hazelton PARISH (1850-1926) of Woodbridge, Suffolk.

Archie and Katie were children of William ALLAN (1841-1926), the head gardener to Lord SUFFIELD of Gunton Park, near Cromer, and Hannah Eliza née ROCKHILL (1843-c.1905). Hannah was a sister of Ellen GOBBITT's mother, Louisa Ann HADINGHAM (c.1830-1906). Their parents (the common ancestors of all these cousins) were William ROCKHILL of Uggeshall, Suffolk (c.1805-1867) and Louisa LARTER (c.1804-1905), who married at Sotherton, Suffolk, in 1827.
