Smiths of CT, MA, & NY DNA project

Posted: 26 Jun 2003 5:25PM GMT
Classification: Query
Surnames: Smith
The CT & MA Smith DNA project is now adding Smiths of New York state. It is
for descendants of Smiths who lived in Connecticut, Massachusetts, or New
York before the 20th century. Those who participate must be male Smiths, as
the genetic characteristic measured is passed along the male line from
father to son (Y-chromosome). If you are not a Smith but research Smith and
have a male relative with the Smith surname, you could encourage that person
to be a participant, and the information would benefit your genealogical
search. The DNA test involves a simple cheek swab that is analyzed by a
research lab. I am coordinating the project, which receives discounted
group rates. Those wishing to join the project or ask questions can contact
me at cgaziano@prodigy.net.

Either a "12-marker test" or a "25-marker test" can be selected to obtain
results that can be compared with those of others to determine if
relationship exists or not. The test is of the Y chromosome, which is
passed from father to son unchanged, except for a mutation about every 500
generations. The 12 markers (allele positions) or 25 markers have been
described as "genetic fingerprints."

If there is a match of 12 out of 12 markers, we can say the probability is
50% that the Most Recent Common Ancestor (MRCA) was no longer ago than 14.5
generations, and the probability is 90% that the MRCA was no longer ago than
48 generations. If two or more participants match on 12/12 markers, they can
choose to upgrade their results to the 25-marker test. With a match on 25
out of 25 markers, there is a 50% probability that the MRCA was no longer
ago than 7 generations, and there is a 90% probability that the MRCA was no
longer ago than 19.8 generations. The cost is $101 ($99 + $2 postage) for
the 12-marker test and $90 additional to upgrade to the 25-marker test (the
cheek-swab sample sent in initially is given further analysis; no more
samples are necessary). If a participant wishes to have the 25-marker test
done in the beginning, the cost is $171.00. See this site for a table that
summarizes the MRCA information: www.familytreedna.com/faq2.html.

According to the lab (Family Tree DNA), two individuals are considered to be
related for the 12-marker test if they match on 12/12 or 11/12 markers --
sometimes with 10/12. If they match on 11/12 or 12/12 markers, then
upgrading to the 25 marker test is recommended. Participants could also
choose to do the full 25 marker test upon enrolling. Further description is
at www.familytreedna.com/description.html.

A web page for this project is now being constructed.

2 years ago 3 regional projects were merged into one large master project, to include the project date referenced above. This was done so that regardless of location all Smith/Schmidt/Smythe/Smyth et al can compare data against every other Smith. The project location is at http://www.smithsworldwide.org
