Hello:

I am trying to find out what coal mines were in Carter County (esp. near "EK" ) I had a great uncle who lived in Willard, KY - who we were told died as a result of a coal mining accident in 1918.

Any information regarding this area would be greatly appreciated.
I'm also interested in knowing information about mines that were in Jeriel, KY.

Thanks - Deb

By chance, who was your great uncle? There were Hicks, Cooks and Gollihues working at the silver mine (there's a fork in the road) just past Willard (in Partlow). The KY map shows both, but in driving through, I only saw the church in Willard (no stop signs or stop lights, and no even a communitiy now, just a strech of road).

I haven't seen my uncle on line lately, but I have contacted a few others that had ties to Willard.

Please, let me know.

Thank you for your message. My g-uncle's name was Albert Taylor. He died May 28, 1918 in Charleston Hospital resulting from injuries in a coal mining accident. From what we know he worked for the Kanawha Mining company...unfortunately haven't been able to find out any details about the mining accident or exactly when it occurred. I am going by information found on his death certificate. - Deb

My grandfather Elmer J. Hicks also worked in the coal mines in W. Virginia I believe.

You would'nt happen to know if Elmer wass related in any wat to an AJ hicks, aka Andy or Andrew, that married a Rice?
I ran across a marriage certificate in the Carter County Courthouse, and I have a picture of them on their wedding day. My grandfather hasd the picture, but I'm not sure of the relation.

Any info on this would help.
Thanks, Dan

Ok. Thanks. If you ever find out that your grandfather was related to an Andrew Jackson Hicks (AJ Hicks), let me know.
Thanks, Dan
