The only Merritt family written about in our county history book was Walter Jackson and Audrey Snodgrass Merritt.
Don't know if they are yours or not. One Welch story is about Afred Newman Welch and his wife Sarah Julia Merritt. Alfred was born near Del Rio Tx on 3-13-1881, the eldest child of William Maddison and Vannie Lee Wofford Welch. He was a rancher and also bought and sold land. He also owned several businesses. Alfred married Sarah Julia Merritt on 7-23-1900 and to this union were born 10 children: Lela May 12-3-1901; Oliver Elec (Bud) 5-12-1903, died 7-17-1966; Georgia Letha born 4-15-1905; Ezery Alfred (Hog) born 1-16-1907, died 8-8-1991; Verde Clara born 4-27-1909, died 9-21-1991; Everett Daniel born 5-29-1912, died 12-11-1991; Jack Cleveland born 12-16-1915; A.W. Boyd born 1-16-1917; Maxine Augusta born 2-3-1920, died 4-27-1922; Sofia Reta born 2-26-1922, died 4-5-1948. Afred and Julia were divorced and in 1936 , he married Josephine Blair Hutcherson. Lela May Married John Melvin Hicks on 6-2-1918 and they had nine children. Bud Welch married Nona B. Allison on 5-24-1920 and they had eight children. Georgia married Alvin Louis Haynes on 6-9-1920 and they had 3 children. Ezra (Hog) married Sammie Ophilia Allison on 11-27-1927 and they had 2 children. Sammie Allison was a sister to Nona Allison, Bud's wife. Verdie married Homer Franklin Hargrove on 11-21-1931 and they had 5 children. Everett married Loyce Mae Pruitt on 9-23-1932 and they had 11 children. Jack married Mary Katherine Piper on 6-7-1950 and they had one child. A. W. Boyd and Eula Mytell Jones were married 11-11-1938 and had 6 children. Maxine Augusta drowned in a water tank when she was two years and two months old. She drowned on Verdie's 13th birthday. Reta married Louis Jay Dean on 7-4-1941 and they had one child. Alfred Newman died 9-16-1954 in Uvalde at the age of 73 with Julia at his side. Sarah Julia was born 2-23-1881, the second of 15 children, born to Alexander Washington and Elizabeth Katherine Hope Merritt. She died on Pecos Street in Uvalde , Tx at the home of Ollie Haynes. Her daughters Lela and Verdie were with her in her final moments and the last thing she said was , " Lela, are you cold?" She and Alfred are buried beside each other in the Vance Cemetery in Vance , TX.
