Hi, I was wondering if anyone actually knew where the Kalar name was from originally? Is it Irish? I know there's a Kalar river in Russia, if that has anything to do with it. Thanks!

Elizabeth

According to our family lore, the name is German. Maxwell Hu, in his book about Tucker County, mentions that the Kalar folks are German. We think that the name was Koehler or Kahler or Kaylor. They may have been illiterate and spelled it as they heard it.

I have been in touch with a Kalar family living in northern Minnesota whose ancestor, John Kalar, immigrated to the US from Slovenia in the early 1900's. We found no connection between these folks and the Kalar folks of VA, MD, and WV.
They told me that, to their knowledge, the last name has always been spelled 'Kalar'.

I was in touch, via e-mail, with a gentleman who lives in Canada and has the last name of Kalar. He is from India!

There is a story in our family that Johnson Marshall Kalar gave considerable money for mission work in the area where the Kalar River is located - that the river and other places there were named for him. True? Don't know.

Are you part of this family? If so, I would like to hear back from you. My mother is a Kalar.

Regards,

Beth Webb

Hi Belinda,

This is what I have on the Canadian Kalars. Some of the Kalar folks did go to Canada before the Revolutionary War
( we think) because they were Loyalists to England. They went to the Niagara area...don't have my notes in front of me right now so can't tell you exactly where. We think that they were in the Maryland/Virginia/Pa area first.

Some of them did return to the U.S. (NY state) a few generations later. Many are still in Canada. Vincent Kalar wrote a genealogy of that branch of the Kalars. He could not definitely link the WV Kalars to the Canadian Kalars; however, this story has been handed down through both sides of the family. I would surmise that it is probably true, but have no proof.

Thank you so much for your reply. Others have written to me saying that the name is Slovenian. Our family was told it came from the German name, Koehler.
The history of your people is very interesting. I am going to add it to my genealogy work for future generations to read.
Congratulations on taking part in the politics of your country. It takes a special person to want to be a part of the governing body.
Thank you again for your reply.

I am doing some research re the Kalar family for a family who are descended from the Kalars who came to Canada after the Revolutionary war as Loyalists, or as family members of Loyalists.
Do you have any information as to where those Kalar originated? There have been quite a few suggestions, but we need some proofs!
Thank you.
