I have discovered that my family is descended from a John Robert Spenceley born c.1803, possibly in London. I have traced members of this family from St. Giles Cripplegate to Shoreditch, Marylebone, Borough, Bermondsey, Islington, New Cross and Deptford, possibly also to Devenport and possibly ultimately to Leyton in the 20th century. I have, however, been unable to trace any further back. I will be glad to share the limited amount that I have found, if anybody thinks that it will be any help.

My Grandfather's father was called Spenceley. His father was a hairdresser and had a shop in Deptford. There were 2 Hairdressers in Deptford at the time with the name Spenceley - George and Robert.

My grandfather was born out of wedlock and took his mother's name.

Hello

I'm sorry but I cannot find a Frederick G. Spenceley in my immediate line. His age is also a bit too young to be the son of the first John Robert Spenceley, and too old to be the son of the second John Robert Spenceley. Although the younger John Robert had younger brothers the age is even more unsuitable for any of them. I feel sure that there may well be a connection somewhere but I am afraid that I have no information with which to assist.

I could have given you a little more information , Frederick father was James Maudlon Spenceley from Stepney and hjis mother was Sophia Ann Tatham also Stepney. His father I beleive to be Richard James or Richard and have been unable to pin it down. With all the Spenceleys in the area there must having been additional siblings on his side. It is strange as I have all my grandmother's siblings. There are relatives in UK by the name of Woodard, Flip[pence and Stroud.

Best regards

Henry

It is very possible that the two hairdressers were related to my paternal family. All mails were born in WestHam to Frederick George Spenceley and Louisa Jane Vosper. You may contact me for further information, I will go back and have a look.

I beleive that the Robert Spenceley, hair dresser born 1858 was the son of James Maudlon Spenceley and Sofia Ann Spenceley nee Tatham. Married in 1846. James M. Spenceley was the father of my grandfather Frederick George Spenceley and Jouisa Jane Spenceley nee Vosper. Futher information of the family is available. How George fits inb I can't pin down.

Thanks for that.

I'm interested in the name Peirce since it crops up in another part of my tree in a census as a first name.

My grandfather - George Savill took his mothers name and the birth certificate says father unknown but I've seen a photograph of the man he called his dad and there is a resemblance. He was a Spenceley. My Grandfather married Esther Say and the Peirce crops up in her side in a census return. I know that my grandparents met when they moved into the same house (about 1916).

Would like to see any Spenceley information that you have. Have you check into the FreeBMD files on the net? My stream starts as far as I know with Sampson to Peirce to Vosper to Spenceley. Some were go back to Ireland.
