I think I have a bit of info on your Emma. I have a general dbase of VO's as I try to sort out my own line. Happy to share with you or anyone researching VO's and reading this...is in excel.

I have four Emma's; two of which I think are yours. I will combine data as I make an entry for each known fact. These two are probably the same person. (The other two entries were born 1848 and 1850.)

Emma F. VanOrder b: Jul 1858 in NY or VT. Father: Charles VO (1817-); Mother: Louisa (1826-). Husband: Charles T. Atwell. Had 11 children.

If you can find Kevin Horsch...this is his line. Found in census records 1860 also. Last email I had for Kevin was <kemiho99@aol.com>

I am in contact with Kevin. I am a decendant of Berton Atwell who is Emma's eldest. It is being said Charles is not Berton's biological father, but his adopted father. It is said Conrad/Coonrod Gress may be Emma's first husband and Berton's biological father. Any info on this?

My cousin is doing some research and has came up with the same thing. She requested military papers for Charles when he enlisted in 1878 indicated he was single -- but the pension questionnaire he indicates he was married in 187(?). She also found a marriage record for Emma F. VanOrder in Jackson CountyMichigan to a Coonrode Gress on January 1, 1878 -- and then on her widow's pension form for Charles' benefits she says they married in 1883 and further she indicates neither of them had been married before. So, who knows?
