CELEBRATIONS - LOUDERMILK ANNIVERSARY

OBIT - LOUDERMILK , LUTHER, (LUKE)

Roanoke Times, The (VA) - Monday, December 4, 2006

JUST A COMMON SOLDIER

He was getting old and paunchy, and his hair was falling fast, And he sat around the Legion telling stories of his past, Of a war that he had fought in and the deeds that he had done, In his exploits with his buddies-they were heroes, every one And though sometimes to his neighbors, his tales became a joke, All his Legion Buddies listened, for they knew whereof he spoke. But we'll hear his tales no longer, for old Bill has passed away, And the world's a little poorer, for a soldier died today. He was just a common soldier, and his ranks are growing thin, But his presence should remind us we may need his like again. For when countries are in conflict, then we find the soldiers part Is to clean up all the troubles that others often start. If we cannot give him honor, while he's here to hear the praise, Then at least let's give him homage, at the end of his days. Perhaps a simple notice in the paper that would say, "Our Country is in mourning, cause a Soldier passed away."

Luther (Luke) Loudermilk, 82, of Rocky Mount, passed away Friday December 1, 2006. Mr. Loudermilk was retired from the military having served in the US Navy during WWII. He was assigned to the Pacific Fleet stationed aboard the USS Detroit. He then completed his military career in the U.S. Army after serving in the Korean conflict as a part of the 780th Field Artillery Battalion. After retiring from the military in 1965 he moved to Franklin County and worked in various positions until he again retired at the age of 72. He was a life long member of the VFW, American Legion DAV and Masonic Lodge 201 AF & AM. He was born February 11, 1924 in Brazil, Indiana to the late James W. and Pearl Smith Loudermilk and was also preceded in death by his wife of fifty years, Bernice Arrington Loudermilk, one son, Gary Luther Loudermilk, two brothers and one sister. He is survived by two children, daughter, Kathy L. Boone and husband Tony; son, James "Jamie" Loudermilk; five grandchildren, Sherry Deanhofer (Ryan), Stephanie Bermudez, Tim Boone, Evan Boone, Kaitlyn Boone; one great-grandson, Conner Bermudez; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Dave and Pearl Arrington, O.J. and Pat Arrington, Bill and Joyce Arrington; two sisters-in-law Barbara Kidman and husband Lee, Evelyn Arrington; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel 11 a.m. Monday with Rev. Joe Dillon and Rev. J. Larry Holland officiating. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park.
