Surnames: SPURGEON, ODELL
I am looking for anyone desc. from or researching the Spurgeons in Cocke Co., TN, who had desc. who moved to Jackson Co., Al and perhaps Wayne Co., MO. This is the info that I have at this time:

Descendants of Margaret Spurgeon

Generation No. 1

1. MARGARET1 SPURGEON

Notes for MARGARET SPURGEON:
Susan Spurgeon, of Nashville, Tenn., states that her father, William Jr., wrote down before his death that James Taylor Spurgeon's mother's first name was Margaret and that he had two brothers, John and Thomas, who "moved to Missouri and stayed".

In an effort to find the parents or husband of Margaret, I am putting this information here because Margaret is listed with a daughter named Miranda in the 1870 Census. I don't know if there is any connection to this family.

This is the Spurgeons in Sevier Co., TN found on USGENWEN for Sevier Co., TN:

Notes for JAMES TAYLOR SPURGEON:
I spoke to Elizabeth Spurgeon Walden, dau. of James Taylor Spurgeon, Jr., today-Dec. 12, 1999. Elizabeth gave me the info on Mary Odell's family. This was found a piece of paper found in Uncle Jim's Bible. Elizabeth also said that she had always heard that James Taylor Spurgeon, Sr. was born in Va. Susan Spurgeon, another cousin, has told her that she believes that he was born in Tenn.
James Taylor Spurgeon died in Limrock, Jackson Co., AL after emergency Gallbladder Surgery.

Email dated 2/29/00 from Susan Spurgeon: Found Notebook of her father and it said that JTS came to Woodville, Al. and was a Section Foreman for Southern R.R.

The following information comes from USGENWEB. search engine for the state of Alabama.

1870 Census Cocke Co., TN, Dist. 8, Newport P.O., Page 441A, HH# 50:

William Vincent, 96, Farmer, Value of Real Estate, 10,000, Value of Personal Estate, 1000, Delaware
Margaret Spurgeon, 30, Housekeeper, TN
James, 15, Laborer on Farm, TN
John, 12, Laborer on Farm, TN
Thomas, 7, TN
Miranda, 1, TN

Mr. Vincent's age on the census is clearly 90something that looks like a 6 but is unlike the other 6s on the page-but it is clear that the census states that he is 90something! The census states that he is deaf.

This does appear to be James Taylor Spurgeon. It is known that he had two brothers, John and Thomas. No one has heard of a sister named Miranda, tho. Margaret's marital status is not given. According to the census, Margaret could not write, James and John could not read nor write.
Maranda, 1, TN. There is no relationship noted between Mr. Vincent and Margaret.

Is this Thomas, the brother of James Taylor Spurgeon, and Margaret, his mother??? Or just a coincident???
=================================================================

William D. Page of Huntsville, Al sent me death certificates, obits, and other records that he has collected. This has given me a good bit of information to add to the Spurgeons. The death certificates of Uncle Tom and Uncle Will both state that James T. was born in TN and Uncle Will's states that James T. was born in New Prt, TN as was his wife, Mary Lee Odell. Mary's death certificate states that her parents were William O'dell and Eliza Webb, both born in New Port, TN. Burial was Feb 3, 1942 at Peters Cove, AL. A. W. Spurgeon, son, was the informant.

More About JAMES TAYLOR SPURGEON:
Burial: Peters Cove Cemetery, Jackson Co., Al.

Notes for MARY LEE ODELL:
In the 1860 C. of Cocke Co., Tenn., Mary is listed as "Nancy", age 3. In the 1870 C., she is listed as Mary, age 12 ?-it is so hard to read that it could be any two digit number-, Eliza is listed as age 15, and Susan as 10.

Documents were sent to me by William D. Page of Huntsville, AL.

Death Certificate gives date of birth as April 11, 1856 in New Port, Cocke Co., TN. The death certificate information is given by A. W. Spurgeon, son of Mary Lee Odell and James Taylor Spurgeon. Her age at death is given as 85 years, 9 months, and 20 days. Parents given as William O'dell and Eliza Webb who were born born in New Port, Cocke Co., TN. Burial was Feb 3, 1942 at Peters Cove.

Burial: Peters Cove Cemetery, Jackson Co., Al.

ii. JOHN SPURGEON, b. Abt. 1858.

Notes for JOHN SPURGEON:
Cocke Co., TN marriages:

FINE, SARAH SPURGEON, JOHN 363 12 MAR 1883 S P MCMAHAN

Same John Spurgeon???

iii. THOMAS SPURGEON, b. Abt. 1863.
iv. MIRANDA SPURGEON, b. Abt. 1869.

I don't know who Margaret's husband was. Is this Thomas Spurgeon in Wayne Co., MO the same one who was in Cocke Co., TN in the 1870 Census? Is this the same Margaret?

I would appreciate any help with this. I am willing to share anything that I have.

Thank you

Mona Herrin

The only names I recognize are Clement Clay Spurgeon and his third wife Julie Fowler who married again after C.C. died. He was my great grandfather. He was born in Valley Head, Al. spent time in Ark. during the civil war and wound up in Higdon, Jackson, Al. His father was Jacob Spurgeon and his mother was Rachel Rainey. The census' say Jacob was born in Va. but we can't find any more about him. Spurgeon/Spurgin is such a rare name it seems strange that there would be two sets of Spurgeons in one county and them not be related.
