CHARLES MICHEAL GOETZINGER, 76, of Defiance, died Saturday, April 8th, at his home. Funeral services will be held 11:00-a.m. Tuesday, April 11th, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Defiance. Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Harlan has the arrangements.

Charlie M. Goetzinger - Age - 76

Charles Michael “Charlie” Goetzinger, the son of Joseph and Catherine (Blum) Goetzinger, was born on September 25, 1929 at Defiance, Iowa.

He was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance, Iowa. Charlie attended country school and then St. Paul’s Catholic School in Defiance, graduating with the class of 1947. Upon graduation, Charlie worked for the railroad.

On September 25, 1951, Charlie was inducted into the United States Army at Omaha, Nebraska. He served during the Korean Conflict and was awarded the Korean Service Medal with three bronze service stars, United Nations Service Medal, and the Combat Medical Badge. He was honorably discharged on June 24, 1953, at Camp Carson, Colorado.

On August 20, 1960, Charlie was united in marriage to Eunice J. Heithoff at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Elgin, Nebraska. After their marriage, the couple made their home in Defiance, and have remained there since that time. Charlie worked for the Milwaukee Railroad until retiring in 1980. He and Eunice then ran the Unity Café in Manilla, Iowa. Charlie later was employed at Dubuque Pack and then the 59'er Restaurant in Harlan, Iowa. Most recently, Charlie worked at the Rusty Nail and Tobe’s Place.
Charlie was a lifelong member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance, Iowa and the American Legion Post No. 707 of Defiance and Westphalia. He was very dedicated to the legion. He enjoyed gardening flowers and vegetables and cooking. Most of all, he loved providing for and spending time with his daughter, Julie and his three grandsons.

Charlie died on Saturday, April 8, 2006, at his home in Defiance, Iowa, having attained the age of seventy-six years, six months and thirteen days. In addition to his parents, Charlie was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, Irene Backhaus, Elizabeth “Lizzie” Kloewer, Clara “Carrie” Kloewer, Lucille Hoxworth, Lavern “Dick” Goetzinger, Marcella “Sally” Foley, Edward “Dickie” Goetzinger, Josephine Heller, Cleta “Sis” Goetzinger, Rose Rasmussen, Helen “Holly” Kaufman, and LeRoy Goetzinger.
Survivors include his wife, Eunice of Defiance, Iowa; his daughter, Julie Tigges of Harlan, Iowa; his grandsons: Jamie McCullough and his wife, Amy of Ames, Iowa; Jesse McCullough and his fiancé Jessica Schmidt of Omaha, Nebraska; Justin Tigges of Defiance, Iowa; his brother, Virgil Goetzinger and his wife, Irene of Alma, Michigan; sister-in-law, Agnes Goetzinger of Westphalia, Iowa; other relatives and a great many friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Tuesday, April 11, 2006, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance, Iowa, at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Robert Gralapp as the celebrant. Military Rites were conducted in Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery in Defiance, Iowa, by the American Legion Post No. 707 of Defiance and Westphalia. Serving as honorary casket bearers were Don & Mickey Kloewer, Bob & Karen Kloewer, Wes & JoAnn Walker, MaryAnn Kloewer, and Bob Tigges. Serving as casket bearers were Charles Goetzinger, Jeff Tigges, Mark Goetzinger, Ron Schaben, Arnie Heithoff, and Ken Foley.
