I am one of the members of the Toca Family who is also looking for more information of the extended family. I am a black Toca and most of my relatives in recent generations lived in New Orleans. Where is your portion of the family from and where do they live now?

Greetings,

My family is also from New Orleans. Dad moved away to California after WWII. I've gathered a lot of information on the Louisiana Toca's - we are all related except for a couple of families that came in from Cuba. I believe that a black Toca fought for the Union side at the battle of Port Hudson - the first use of black troops in the Civil War. His cousins, my direct ancestors, were fighting for the Confederate side, protecting the fort during the battle for Vicksburg in July 1863.

If you would like to send me some information on your older ancestors, I can see if I have them in my database and send you my information. I'm at crtoca "at" yahoo.com. (I wrote my email address this way to avoid spam).

Hi Celina, good to hear from you.

I've uploaded most of my database to Ancestry.com so much of my connections are now available here. However, my notes don't transfer. I would have to make a "story" for each person. Let me know who you'd like more information on and I'll update the entry with my notes.

I've confirmed that we're both related back to Joseph Alonzo Toca, dob 1767 from Spain. Hi cuz'!

Also, I believe I've found the Toca "plantation". It looks like it's the house at 2206 Bayou Rd. in Toca, St.Bernard Parish, east of the Toca Gas Plant. It's pretty beat-up and looks to be behind the house at the front of the road. I found it using Google Maps and by using the directions to the old pet cemetery, which is the old Toca place.

Hi, I'm a reporter with The Times-Picayune newspaper in New Orleans who ran across your comment stream. I'm working on a story about the Thompson family who started the pet cemetery that appears to rest on the former Toca Plantation. I am curious to speak with you about any information you have eabout the history of the property before Grace Thompson purchased it in 1935. My number is 504.352.2552 or my email is bbloch@timespicayune.com. Grace Thompson's daughter, Dorothy Thompson was murdered in 1985 on the property and just this week there was an arrest of a man who police believe killed her.

Anyhow, I'm trying to piece together a history of that parcel of land. Thanks! Ben

You can read a little about the murder I'm investigating here:
