A thanks to Loren Dahling whose information helped me get past a roadblock with William B. Betterly (Born 1804) and Cloe E. White. Until I found her info I was unable to find William's parents. Now I am back to Elizabeth the mother of Thomas Betterley born 1694. Has anyone gone back any further? If anyone is interested in descendants of William B and Cloe Betterly I would be happy to share info.

I am searching for the cousins of Bertram Oscar Betterly as he was my "step" grandfather. He was the only grandfather that we knew and we spent many hours with him. My favorite memory is that he taught me how to play pinochle and canasta in his home when I was about 12 years old. The sad thing is that we do not know how to connect his cousins or relatives. They did visit in Othello a couple of times and we have a few pictures that we would like to make sure they have. My mother Irene Ivory is his step daughter and we have gone thru her pictures since she is very elderly and found these pictures. If anyone is interested - please contact me.

Thank you

Dear Vicki,
Thank you for your response. I am hoping you will have the e-mail address for Mr. Dahling. If so I will certainly try to contact him.
Thanks again.
Take good care.

Sorry I have not come across anyone by that name in my search. If I should at some point I'll let you know. Loren Dahling seems to have the most info on all Betterly's you might want to check his website. Good Luck

I am the administrator of the Betterley board and noticed your messages. My site is at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~dahling/. Click on the "Betterley/Betterly" link and then on the "webGED: Progenitor" link to search my Betterley database. There are a few closer cousins there for Bertram, but I wouldn't know how to contact any of the living.

I do have a couple names of more distant cousins in this same George Betterley line out east. They are Linda Carlson of Worcester, MA at Lbcpgc@aol.com and Lela Squire of Battle Creek, MI at SQU123@aol.com. My first wife descends from George's brother, Thomas.

I know how you feel. My name is Catherine Anne Galvin. I am trying to find out some lineage on my great grandparents. My grandfather was Oliver Betterley of Brooklyn NY. His parents died when he was a child and we know nothing about them. His mother was Annabel (or Annabelle) Robinson

I was interested in your site because of how you posted it. My grandfather spelled his name Betterley but his brother Henry spelled it Betterly. If you know any of these Betterley's please let me know. I am trying to write my family tree.

My e mail address is brindlebrat@yahoo.com

Wm B Betterly (b 1804) is the brother of my gr-gr-gr-grandfather Thomas J. Betterly (c1813 - 6/29/1888), and both are among the eleven children of Thomas Betterly (b 9/20/1784, Trenton NJ).

Email me if you would be interested in exchanging research.

I am of the Newfane Betterley strain decendent from William Sprague Betterley. The Betterley homestead, now renamed "Lost Mile" by a fine couple is on Dummerston Hill. It was last "Betterley" owned by Ray and Theodora, my Dad's great uncle. There are two cemetaries in the vicinity, and there seems to be a mix of Betterley's and Betterly's. Often brothers will spell their names differently and there is actually a tombstone which reads: ..... Betterly, son of ..... Betterley. My hunch is a stone carver made an error, and offerred some concession to avoid remaking the stone. But this is not in any way unusual. Even the town of Newfane has erected a sign denoting "Betterly Road". It is my belief that no Betterly's ever lived at the Betterley homestead, except by mistake.

The extreme difficulty of retaining the third "e" in the name is persistent. Some families likely grow weary of keeping the name intact. With few exceptions, everyone I've run into in 60 years tries rigorously to drop the third "e". To get it "correct", I have to be continuously vigilant and sometimes obnoxious - a trait that becomes easier as I get older. It's frustrating, but not very rewarding trying to fix everyone.

Point is, I've come to believe that over time that some families have joined the "can't fight them, join them" club. I still refuse to do so. Meanwhile, for the benefit of all Betterly's out there, you are absolved from sin, irrespective of origin. In the world today, there is a plenty to go around, while forgiveness is a rare enough commodity.

You may use the names interchangeably, through no fault of your own.

Hi! My name is Eileen Tabala and your grandfather Oliver was my uncle. My mother was Anna, his sister. Is your mom Linda, or your father Thomas. How is Joey. Is Aunt Anna doing well?
