The correct spelling of Caroline Ganschows maiden name is Seyferlich. In Germany it was Seyberlich.
Do a search on google.com with search term "seyferlich" .

Dear Warren,
I was wondering if you had any info on the Great Chicago Fire. The one where Mrs. O'Leary's cow kicked over the lantern. Why I'm asking is because I believe your Grandfather Charles Seyferlich was Fire Commisioner of Chicago at the time. I am a homeschooling mom and one of my homeschooling friends is studying the Chicago fire and would like info. Also, sorry about mis-spelling Seyferlich. My mom corrected me. Who is Curt/Kurt Seyferlich my mother is his Godmother.

Hi Connie
Charles Seyferlich, my greatgrandfather, ( my dad and older brother are also Charles ) became head of fire department in 1910 when his predecessor and about 11 other firemen where killed at the Stock Yard fire. I've heard that this was the greatest loss of firefighters in U.S. history till 9/11/01. Charles was born in Waren, Germany ( in Germany name was spelled Seyberlich or sometimes Seiberlich ) and came to Chicago as a baby with his parents and grandparents after July 1854. He is buried in Wonders Cemetary at Clark and Irving in Chicago.
His younger brother Arthur was also head of the fire department in later years.
I don't know much about the Chicago Fire but I've run accross newspaper articles about him online. Try a search on google.com. All the Seyferlichs you find will be relitives.
Also try the Library Of Congress web site, they have pictures of Art, Charles and his familey. His son herbert is my grandfather.
Kurt Seyferlich was my first cousin. My dads twin brother William's son born about 1942. I've hear he has passed away.
I knew him well when I was a kid. He lived with my grandmother Clara (nee balow) till he went into the Navy.

Dear Warren,
Thank You for the info. I do believe the stockyards fire was more devastating than what is called The Great Chicago Fire.At least in loss of fire fighters lives.
My grandfather Edward H. Ganschow was the son of Caroline Seyferlich and Charles and Arthur's Nephew. From what I understand he was very close to Uncle Art and was primarily raised by him. Of Edwards children only my mother Helen is alive. George died in 1980, Bobby in 1949, Bud in 1999. My mom is 80 and going strong. They are visiting us currently on our farm in Elk WA. My parents home is in Phoenix AZ.

PS I have twin boys 6yo. My mother has many stories of your Dad and Uncle. Including what amazing escape artists they were as young boys. How exasperating they were to your poor grandmother. LOL I can relate!
