Surnames: Shillingford, Major
I was looking for help with Michael Shillingford, born approx. 1803 in Pennsylvania, wife was Maria. Children were Catharine L(married to my G-G-G Grandfather William Major), Mary Jane, and George W.

I am particularly interested in figuring out how Michael Shillingford is possibly related to James Shillingford (father??, deceased approx. 1813), and Hiram and George Shillingford (possibly brothers???). I found the names together on a Pennsylvania Pensioners, 1835 entry on James Shillingford. I would appreciate any additional information anyone would may have.

You may already have this but...from Philadelphia City Death Certificates and Index 1803-1815 from Family Search (beta testing) online, I have Michael and Maria residing with Wm & Catherine Major in 1880 Census. Also, Maria and Michael & children residing at Spring Garden 2nd Ward with children in 1850 Census. Do you know who Michael's parents were? My Shillingsford originated in Southwark (James and Priscilla had James;that James and Mary had Thomas) then Thomas in Kensington by 1788, m. Rose and had James. My line then stays in Kensington.

I do have the death certificate for Michael and Maria. I am at a brick wall trying to determine both of their parents. I was told once that his father may have been a James Shillingford, but I cannot prove it. The National Archives does not have any military pension records on James Shillingford available even though he is listed in the 1835 pensioners list.

Some Shillingsfords start at Christ Church, then go to Gloria Dei, the ???? There is a Michael Shillingsford on page 2503 of the Gloria Dei records, but I have not reviewed. There are no entries for a Maria. Mine wound up at First Reformed. Re the James', There are no Michaels of James (d. 1761) and Priscilla, James (b.1731;d.1793) and Mary, that I've seen. There is a James (son of James b. 1731) who was born 19 Nov. 1761, m. Elizabeth Loveman, 11 Oct 1783 at Gloria Dei. Have you checked him? The is James m. Mary Hoofstiter 17 June 1809, but can't be yours if Michael was born 1803.

PS - The James who m. Mary Hoofstiter was born in Springfield, d. 16 Aug 1863 Upper Darby. Was the son of John (b. 1 Nov 1760 Phila; d.23 May 1839 Springfield) and Jane Quinn Shillingsford m 1786. Could Michael be another son of John and Jane? brother of their James? There are no entries for a John at Gloria Dei.

I am writing a newsletter for the old Mt. Zion Methodist Meeting Cemetery for July. I am considering using the Shillingford men that were in the Civil War that are buried in this old cemetery. This cemetery dates to 1807. My email is lfwardell@rcn.com
