HELP! There seems to be a lot of confusion about the Wallace line from about 1500-1600. I am referring to, in order, William Wallace (m. to Margaret Stewart), John Wallace II (m. to ??? there are three options), John Wallace I of Craige (m. to Margaret Cunningham), and William Wallace (m. to Margaret Sophia Kennedy). The possible dates for these four generations are so large that it somewhat distorts the line. I have several questions.

1. Who is John Wallace II's REAL wife? Margaret Campbell, Agnes Stewart, or Margaret/Janet Hamilton?

2. Does anyone out there have a handle on the birth or death dates? I have ranges of the following:

A. William Wallace: b. bet 1564-1618, d. bet 1663-1672

B. John Wallace II: b. bet 1541-1587, d. bet 1571-1644

C. John Wallace I: b. bet 1510-1554. d. bet 1541-1631

D. William Wallace: b. abt 1513, d. bef 8 Apr 1551.

Any help or explanations would be VERY HELPFUL!

I'm certainly no expert, but I have Janet Hamilton marrying William Wallace of Elderslie, Renfrew (the Elderslie family). And there are a few William's down that line too.

Unless I've gotten my John's crossed, the 1st John of Craigie b. abt 1331 or thereabouts married first Elizabeth Eglington and 2nd Margarget Lindsay.

I'm guessing that you are referring to the family in Craigie primarily, and I agree with you, the dates are all over the place. There are so many different dates on the internet that it's very difficult to decide who's right and who's wrong. I have the John who married Margaret Cunningham (Cunnyngham) dying in August 1570 according to Rev. Charles Rogers in THE BOOK OF WALLACE.

The other John, I can't identify by the dates.

William b. abt 1513 I have married to Margaret (Margery) Sophia Kennedy. I show his death as 1538, again based on Rev. Roger's book on the Wallace family which can be extremely confusing because he lists very dates of birth or deaths, and in some cases I think he may confuse the Johns and Williams and who suceedes whom. Or I may be confused in trying to interpret what he wrote.

And I could not determine by the dates which William you are asking about.

Hope this helps. or maybe it confuses you more.

Bob

In my second reference to Rev. Rogers' work it should have read:

"William b. abt 1513 I have married to Margaret (Margery) Sophia Kennedy. I show his death as 1538, again based on Rev. Roger's book on the Wallace family which can be extremely confusing because he lists very FEW dates of birth or deaths, and in some cases I think he may confuse the Johns and Williams and who SUCCEEDS whom."

Sorry for the confusion.

Bob

Hi Ramona,

I looked on Dr. Rogers Book, but did not find your Samuel among those mentioned or any of the other associated names.

THE BOOK OF WALLACE by Rev. Charles Rogers was published in 1889 apparently by the Edinburgh Press. Edinburgh appears above the date.

I found it accidently when I was surfing the Heritage Quest collection which is available on line to library card holders through the Chattanooga public library. The book is obviously out of print, but you may be able to find it at your local library. And if there is an LDS library, they may have access to it.

HI Robert Thanks for looking. It is too bad you didn't find my Samuel. There might be a hint in the names of Samuel and Jean Dalziel Wallace's children.
James Fleming Wallace born 12 Sept 1816
Samuel b 6 Jan 1818 Galston
Alexander b 22 Dec 1819 Galston
Andrew b 16 Apr 1821
Margaret b 11 Apr 1823
Robert b 29 Aug 1825 ( my ancestor)
Findlay Wallace b 24 July 1826 ( Jean Dalziel d/o of Andrew Dalziel and Jean Findlay)
William Galt b 1828
Gavin b 24 July 1831
Jean Wallace b 24 Apr 1834
Elizabeth Girvin b 3 Jan 1838
Sarah b 16 June 1840
Curious as to the Fleming, Galt and Girvin middle names, hoping they are a link to my first known Samuel Wallace and his wife Sarah Little
Thanks again Romona

I am glad others are confused too! I am lost on who my direct line is, other than a Robert Wallace who came to America about 1720; by 1739, was in Bucks, Co. Pa. with sons, no wife mentioned; one son James stayed in Pa. but Joseph (born 1767) went to Loudon Co. Va. then on to Fayette Co. Ky. where he died in 1791, I have various names and dates for a Robert Wallace! Can you help with this line? Thank you for whatever!

Marjorie,

I'm afraid I can't help. My paternal ancester migrated to Ireland in the 1690's and there married and later died about 1724. That same year his widow and her sons and daughter migrated to this country, initially settling in PA and later migrating on to the Shenandoah Valley. There was no Robert among the sons who migrated in the family from Irelandimmigrants. The first Robert in my direct line was born in 1818.

Wish we could have matched family lines.

Bob

Bob, Who was your first known ancestor and where in Ireland did he come from? Where in Pa. did you tell me? Then to what county in Virginia? Did they go to Kentucky after that? Also, do you belong to Clan Wallace?
We did not have any Roberts in our line since the original! Strange!
