My grandmother was supposed to have been placed in St. Michael's on 28th St in NYC somewhere around 1904.

Does anyone know anything about this orphanage?

No but... I have had great results requesting information from the New-York Historical Society. On the web at www.nyhistory.org You must write by snail mail, and the service is free. They have sent me photocopies of info on hospitals and schols in NYC. If you need more info after that there is a fee-based research service at the public library too, www.nypl.org/express

good luck :-)

If you feel confident about the 28th Street locale, check the "Official Catholic Directory" for the appropriate year. The New York Public Library has a set of volumes, which it catalogs under the main entry, "Cath Dir and Alm."

But also consider checking the New York State Census of 1905. The Manhattan portion is at the New York County Clerk, who has a card index of street addresses to use as a finding aid.

There was mention in a 1909 source of St. Michael's Home for Destitute Children, at Green Ridge, Staten Island, with a house of reception on West 34th St., Manhattan. This home is discussed on page 255 of the 1982 book, "Adoption Agencies, Orphanages and Maternity Homes : An Historical Directory."

There was a Saint Michael for Girls and Boys located at 1380 Arthur Kill Road Staten Island New York. It was started around the 1900 and stayed opened until the year 1978 where the Sisters of Charity sold the land to developers. I lived there from 1955 to 1972. To get in formation I went to the Staten Island Advance which is the local paper. Good luck with your search.
