Hi everyone. I'm searching for information on Edwin D. Ward and Sarah H. Ward Temple, who appear to have moved to Humboldt County abt 1899 with their brother William John Ward (my GGF), mother Emeline/Emmeline Davis Ward.

By the time of the 1910 census, William John Ward and family had moved to Los Angeles, but we have no record of mother, brother, or sister. Any help is appreciated. Here's most of what we have:

Hello,

I found three members of the Ward Family that you were looking for.

I found obituaries and death records for Edward D. and Emeline A. and also I found Andrew P. Temple who was listed in the 1900 Census as a nephew.

OBITUARIES

These entries are from Obituaries, Humboldt County, California, 1900-1910, compiled by Marilyn Keach Milota.

Ward, Edwin D. Died: 1 Jun 1901 at Eureka. Buried: Ocean View Cemetery. Age: 29 years, 10 mos, 6 days. Mother: Emeline Ward. Brother: Wm J. Ward. (Daily Standard not 1 Jun 1901)

I found Emeline Ward listed in the Ocean View Cemetery records book. I found Andrew Temple listed as Andrew Truple in the cemetery records book, so spelling is not always accurate.

Here is the address and phone # for Ocean View Cemetery:

Ocean View Cemetery/Sunset Memorial Park

Hope this helps you.

P.S. I'm hoping that Darlene Garrity sees your request as she will probably be able to look the obituaries up for you at the library.

Cindy, you're a GEM! Thanks so very much! This fills some significant gaps in the Ward ancestry.

I did see your query and since I was working as a volunteer in the Humboldt room today, copied the exact same things that Cindy did. I did find one more listing in a book called "Some Early Deaths and Burials in Humboldt County". It gives Andrew Temple's burial place as Sec. D Lot 12 Blk 11 Gr 16 in Ocean view cemetery. Perhaps the rest of the family is buried in the same plot. If you want me to look up the obituaries in the newspaper microfilms, let me know and maybe I can do it next Tuesday.

Sarah H. WARD Temple, Hydesville 1900, perished by 1901?

Thanks so very much for all your efforts. I do appreciate that you're willing to look for my/our ancestors in Humboldt County.

My ancestors came to the Humboldt County area around 1899, and were listed in Hydesville during the 1900 census.

Of specific interest is Sarah H. WARD Temple, who is shown in Hydesville with the family during the census, but by December of 1901, is not listed as a surviving child (with her brother William J Ward and sister Julia Ward Pennington) in her mother Emeline's obit (see below obituary). Do any records show that Sarah married or died in Humboldt County between the date of the 1900 census and December 1901?

Thanks so very much!

Hi, I am wondering if I missed your efforts on this topic. I didn't see an update.

I realize it's been 3 years, but I'm still interested in finding whether Edwin Ward (and Sarah H. Ward Temple) are buried in Ocean View cemetary. "Lookup Lady" discovered that Emeline Ward and Andrew Temple are shown to be there, but I'd like to know if the others are as well.

Sarah and Edwin were both in Hydesville during the 1900 census. Edwin perished from "le grippe" in 1901, and Sarah is not listed as a surviving relative, which would indicate she perished in late 1900 or early 1901.

Thanks so much!

If Cindy, (look up lady) didn't find what you were looking for, it probably isn't in the records at the library. Due to medical reasons I had to stop volunteering in the Humboldt Room and no longer do look ups.
I might suggest calling the cemetery 707-445-3188. I understand they are very helpful with genealogy requests. I think most of the names in the cemetery book at the library are just ones with headstones. They may be buried there but don't have a headstone.

Thank you ever so much. I have contacted the cemetary. They checked their records, and they even walked the section for me (you're right; they were exceedingly helpful). There are one or more unmarked graves at the edge of one section that aren't on their list; the individual I contacted presumed the grave may be one of my relatives.

Sarah H. Ward Temple seems to be a likely candidate for the undocumented gravesite. Her son Andrew P. Temple perished in 1902 near Scotia, and is reportedly buried in Ocean Side. She is shown in Hydesville living with her two brothers William John Ward and Edwin D. Ward during the 1900 census, but is not listed as a surviving relative on 1 June 1901 when Edwin dies in Eureka.

Be blessed,
Scotty Ward
