Czalaun (sp?) originating from Vienna...

I'm looking for an ancestor line with the rather unusual name Czalaun. Wenzel Czalaun born 23.09.1820(?) married an Anna Zelter and migrated to Dresden/Saxonia later on. Parents were Thomas and Maria Czalaun. No dates available. Are there any links? I can't seem to find anything.

gravesearch Vienna has the name not in list:
http://www.friedhoefewien.at/
also not to find in phonebook: http://www.herold.at/
are you sure if there is no misspelling?
i found the similar name Czabaun in phonebook and only 5 hits for this. 2 in Vienna and 3 in Lower-Austria.

gravesearch has 2 persons- one with m on end of name, maybe misspelled:
Vorname/firstname Amalia
Nachname/lastname Czabaun
Geburtsdatum/birthdate
Lebensalter/age 49
Sterbedatum/date of death
Bestattungsdatum/burialdate 05.06.1914
Friedhof/cemetry
Wiener Zentralfriedhof/Vienna central cemetry
Gruppe/group 68
Gruppe/group Erwachsene A
Reihe/row 15
Nummer/number 8
Grabnutzungsrecht bis/right for grave until 11.11.2011
Weiters in diesem Grab bestattet/also buried there:
Czabaum Viktor
Neumann Elisabeth Maria 15.12.1898
Scotti Alois 21.06.1870
Scotti Elisabeth

interesting: if you search for Viktor at familienname with Czabaum you get some more persons:
Albertina Aloisia Rudolfina buried 6.5.1956
Julius buried 6.5.1956
Albertina Francisca Maria Leopoldine buried 9.1.1974
this 3 at Feuerhalle Simmering (fire-burials)

Viktor buried 3.11.1914

if you think persons with this name can be a possibility, so write for more info to the general cemetry administration
http://www.wien-konkret.at/soziales/friedhof/

and also to the special cemetries:

Hi,

I think that a surname spelled "Czalaun" actually does exist. Which doesn't necessarily mean that the one you're researching is NOT misspelled ...

I would however try http://www.surnamenavigator.org/ and if you think your ancestor was actually from Vienna, you could also try the last link Mohnbauerin gave you: "Tracing your Ancestors in Vienna ...".

Good luck
Tilman

I know that the name Czalaun exists at other places. :o)

now, as Austria has no Czalaun in phonebook and also not at gravesearch Vienna this maybe shows they came from another place of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire to Vienna.

Alright, just digging up this thread to provide an update for other researchers...
The Czalauns originate from the Herzman/Protivin area in south Bohemia. They lived there for several generations as millers, mainly at the Beneshov Mill (Benessovsky Mlyn). Thanks to the archive of Trebon I could trace them down to the 1670s over there. Older source material doesnt seem to exist.

Interessant - kann die Linie auf die Verbindung Czalaun / Zeller zurückgeführt werden (oo 1849)?

I just recently identified my distant relative as a "Chalone from Beneshof Mill" (that is how the family translated it). It took me a long time to figure out the corret spelling of her last name, but I am certain now having seen the correct spelling on one of her son's baptism records.

Her name was Josefa Czalaun. She married Joseph Polacek in Poland in 1844. Her children were born in Pisek, Bohemia betwee 1845 and 1852. She immigrated to the US in 1853 where she lived with her family in Central Missouri.

You mention that the archive of Trebon has information on the Czalauns. Where do I find this archive?

if Josefa Czalaun originates from Beneshov Mill she is most certainly the sister of my 4x grand father Tomas Czalaun. I have her as born on March 26th 1822. They were at least 12 children, parents being Franz Czalaun and Josepha Spiewak.
The Trebon archive is an invaluable source of genealogical information for the whole bohemian/czech region as it contains digital copies of almost all available church records.

Looks like I need to brush up on my Czech...

Thanks for your input. I do have some info as well. On Josie's headstone it lists her birth date as 19 Mar 1824, but I cannot confirm whether that was accurate or not.

What additional information can you provide? I searched the name Czalaun in the search address and I'm not really certain what to be looking for. Any tips?
