Does anyone know anything about a town in Jefferson Parish called Mechanickham? My ancestor, Jules Jeanne and family are listed on the 1880 census as living in this town. I don't believe it exists anymore. Was it renamed? Is it near to any other present-day cities in Jefferson Parish?

I visited Gretna last summer. On a sign as you enter the town.......
CITY OF GRETNA
Incorporated 20 August 1913.
John Ehret, First Mayor.
Seat of Jefferson Parish Government since 1884.
German settlement laid out in 1836 by Benjamin Buisson for Nicolas Noel Destrehan as VILLAGE OF MECHANIKHAM.

John Ehret was a brother to my Gt. Grandmother Catherine EHRET.
I was always perplexed looking at the census too. I hope this helps.

Mechanickham was changed to Grenta when the town was incorporated. Do you have an exact address of his residence or place of business? I understand he was a "Store Keeper".
