Oscar Adelbert was a Cady on his mother's side. Here are some of his ancestors. I'm a distant cousin too, probably.

First Generation

1. Oscar Adelbert Vandusen 1-6 was born in 1848/49 in Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He appeared in the census in 1850 in Farmington Twp, Tioga, Pennsylvania. He appeared in the census in 1860 in Farmington Twp, Tioga, Pennsylvania. He appeared in the census in 1870 in Farmington Twp, Tioga, Pennsylvania. He appeared in the census in 1880 in Farmington Twp, Tioga, Pennsylvania. He was also known as Vandeusen, Vanduesen.

You find this family as Vandusen, Van Dusen, Van Deusen, Vandeusen, Van Duesen, or Vanduesen. "Vandusen" is the most common, and I have used it consistently. [TP]

Oscar seems to have gone by "O. A'" most of his life. His middle name may have been "Adelbert"; it is "Adelmes" and "Adelmar" on some records.

In 1880 the family is in Farmington, Tioga, Pennsylvania:

In 1900 the family is in Farmington, Tioga, Pennsylvania:

Van Dusen, O A, head, Jul 1850, 49, Penn, NY, Penn, farmer
Van Dusen, Anna C, wife, Feb 1855, 25, Penn, Penn, Penn

Van Dusen, Ross, son, Nov 1894, 5, Penn, Penn, Penn
Barnheart, Winsor, Lodger, 1872, 28, Penn, Penn, Penn

OA and Ann have been married for 22 years.

Second Generation

2. William Vandusen 1-4,7-10 was born on 8 Jan 1823 in Schoharie County, New York. He died on 14 Jul 1892 in Farmington Twp, Tioga, Pennsylvania. He was buried in Farmington Twp, Tioga, Pennsylvania - Peters Cem.

The 1897 Tioga County History says:

WILLIAM VANDUSEN was born in Schoharie County, New York, January 8, 1822, and came with his parents, Walter and Betsey Van Dusen, to Farmington township, Tioga county, in 1835. On attaining his majority he purchased a tract of fifty acres in Farmington, for which he went into debt $200, and before the principle was all paid, the interest amounted to $108.

He subsequently added to his original purchase until he owned ninety acres, which he sold. In 1863 he bought the Lemuel Cady homestead of 100 acres, and subsequently added thereto 100 acres more. A good share of the last tract he cleared and improved, and resided upon this farm until his death.

Mr. VanDusen married Emily Cady, a daughter of Lemuel and Ruth (Gleason) Cady, to which union were born four children, viz: Oscar A., Josephine, deceased; Frank and Fred, the last two being twins.

In politics, he was a stanch Republican, and in religious belief, a Methodist. He held many of the local offices in Farmington, was highly respected in the community, where he spent nearly sixty years of his life, and always took an active part in public affairs.

George J. Locey, Other, S, Male, W, 29, NY, Farm Laborer, Pa, Pa
Sarah Kinnan, Other, S, Female, W, 31, Pa, House Keeper, Pa, Pa

"Vanosen" is a new and exciting variation. I had to search for any Emily whose head of household was William to find them. William Vandusen and Emily (Emma) Cady were married in 1846/47.

3. Emily (Emma) Cady 1-4,6-8,10-14 was born on 30 Dec 1827 in Farmington Twp, Tioga, Pennsylvania. She appeared in the census in 1850 in Farmington Twp, Tioga, Pennsylvania. She appeared in the census in 1860 in Farmington Twp, Tioga, Pennsylvania. She appeared in the census in 1870 in Farmington Twp, Tioga, Pennsylvania. She appeared in the census in 1880 in Farmington Twp, Tioga, Pennsylvania. She appeared in the census in 1900 in Farmington Twp, Tioga, Pennsylvania. She died on 13 Dec 1905 in Farmington Twp, Tioga, Pennsylvania. She was buried in Farmington Twp, Tioga, Pennsylvania - Peters Cem.

History of Tioga County:

WILLIAM VANDUSEN owns a farm of 160 acres. He was born in 1823, in Schoharie county, N.Y. Mrs. Vandusen was Emily Cady, of Farmington.

Joyce Tice's Tri-County US Gen Web site has Emily's obituary:

CADY, Emma
Wellsboro Agitator – December 20, 1905
Mrs. Emma VanDusen died suddenly at her home on the State road in Farmington township, on Wednesday, December 13th, from an acute attack of appendicitis.

She was born at Osceola, December 30, 1837, and consequently was almost 78 years of age at the time of her death. She was the eighth of the eleven children of Lemuel and Ruth (Gleason) Cady, who removed to Farmington when their daughter was about two years old and where she grew to maturity amid pioneer surroundings. When 20 years old she became the wife of William VanDusen, who died in 1893, since which time she has remained his widow. For 16 years they lived in a home in the western part of the town which they carved out of the wilderness. In 1863 they purchased the Cady homestead, her childhood home, where she lived the remainder of her life and where she died.

In face, form and figure she possessed in youth and age an attractive personality. Her very presence conciliated good will. Of an equable temperament and a kindly disposition, her influence on those with whom she came in contact has been most wholesome and helpful.

It is nearly sixty years since she became a professed Christian, and in church, Sunday school and community, she has done her religions work. In connection with the Methodist Episcopal church. It was most sincere and genuine. From the time of her marriage her life was devoted to the sweet ministries of wife and mother. Mr. and Mrs. VanDusen were the parents of four children —Oscar Adelbert and Fred, of Farmington, ex Sheriff Frank VanDusen, of Osceola, who survive their mother, and Josephine, who died in 1863, aged nine years. Funeral services were held at her late home Friday at 11 a. m., Rev. Robert S. Bell officiating. Interment in Highland cemetery, Farmington. (Buried in Peter’s Cemetery)

He died on 17 May 1936 in Osceola Borough, Tioga, Pennsylvania. He was buried in Osceola, Tioga, Pennsylvania - Fairview Cem.

Shirley Cleveland graciously shared this with the world via her RWWC Database:

Wellsboro Gazette, Tioga, PA, Thursday, May 21, 1936

Osceola - Fred VanDusen, 72, died at his home here, Monday. He was born in Farmington, the son of William and Emma Cady VanDusen. Fred and Hattie have been married for 16 years

Third Generation

6. Lemuel Cady 7,22-27 was born on 22 Feb 1785 in New London, New London, Connecticut. He appeared in the census in 1850 in Farmington Twp, Tioga, Pennsylvania. He appeared in the census in 1860 in Farmington Twp, Tioga, Pennsylvania. He appeared in the census in 1870 in Meriden, La Salle, Illinois. He died in 1878 in Casey, Guthrie, Iowa.
The 1897 Tioga County History says:

LEMUEL CADY, a native of Connecticut, settled in Osceola, Tioga county, about 1810. In 1812 he removed to Farmington township and purchased 200 acres of land, which he soon afterwards sold and returned to Osceola. He was a carpenter, and worked at his trade up to 1823 in Osceola, when he bought 100 acres in Farmington adjoining his original purchased. He cleared and improved this property and resided upon it many years.

In later life he removed to Iowa, and died in that State at the age of eighty-four years. He married Ruth Gleason, of Connecticut, who bore him eleven children, viz: Chester, Abner, Lemuel, William, Simeon, Selina, who married I. D. Foote; Polly, who married Lucius Daly; Emma, who married William Van Dusen; George, Charles and Erastus. In religion, Mr. Cady was an adherent of the Christian church, and in politics, a Republican.

In 1850 the family is in Farmington Twp, Tioga. Pennsylvania:

Lemuel Cady, 64, Conn, carpenter
Ruth Cady, 57, Mass
Charles Cady, 20, NY, Farmer
Erastus Cady, 16, Pa, Do
George Cady, 14, Pa

Abner Cady, 35, NY, Farmer
Betsy Cady, 27, NY
Hester J Cady, 8, Pa
E Ruth Cady, 6, Pa

Isaac D Foote, 30, NY, Laborer
Selina Foote, 26, Pa
Naomi Foote, 4, Ill
[Naomi's age is "21" on the index, and the "4" does look like "21", so the mistake is easy to understand. It's a "4", though.]

See son Lemuel Cady for the 1860 census entry.
See son George Cady for the 1870 census entry.

Lemuel's birth year is
1785, according to Majorie Stuhr.
1794, according to son Simeon's biography in the History of Tioga County; it says Lemuel died in 1878, aged 84.
1786 (age 64) on the 1850 census.
1786 (age 74) on the 1860 census.
1787 (age 83) on the 1870 census.
22 Feb 1785 on the IGI.

I'm using the IGI date; it seems reasonable.

Lemuel Cady and Ruth Gleason were married in 1812/13 in Connecticut.

7. Ruth Gleason 7,22,28,29 was born on 6 Nov 1792 in Charlton, Worcester, Massachusetts. She died on 1 Jul 1850 in Farmington Twp, Tioga, Pennsylvania. She appeared in the census in 1850 in Farmington Twp, Tioga, Pennsylvania. She was buried in Farmington Twp, Tioga, Pennsylvania - Peters Cem.

Tombstone listing says Ruth died 1 July 1850 aged 57 years, 8 months 25 days, which makes her birthday 7 Oct 1792.

Lemuel Cady and Ruth Gleason had the following children:

i.Chester J. Cady 1,7,30-34 was born on 13 Oct 1813 in Locke, Cayuga, New York. He died on 16 Sep 1884 in Farmington Twp, Tioga, Pennsylvania. He was buried in Farmington Twp, Tioga, Pennsylvania - Peters Cem.
In 1850 the family is in Farmington, Tioga, Pennsylvania:

Chester Cady, 35, Penn, Farmer
Catharine Cady, 33, NY
Maria Cady, 10, Penn
Ann Cady, 8, Penn
Eunice Cady, 5, Penn
Emma Cady, 2, Penn

They are in HH 152. Chester's brother, Simeon, is in HH 151.

In 1860 the family is in Farmington, Tioga, Pennsylvania:

Chester Cady, 46, NY, farmer
Catherine Cady, 44, NY
Maria Cady, 19, Penn
Osen [Ann] Cady, 18, Penn
Eunice Cady, 15, Penn
Emogene Cady, 12, Penn
Mary Cady, 6, Penn

In 1870 a widowed Chester is in Farmington, Tioga, Pennsylvania:

Charles Cady, 56, farmer
Maria Cady, 29, housekeeper
Mary Cady, 16,

The enumerator missed his stroke on the "t" in "Chester", and Chester got indexed as "Charles". Charles, Chester's brother, and thus a likely candidate to take in two orphaned nieces, was born in 1830. This is Chester. Maria is keeping house for him.

In 1880 Chester has remarried. He is in Farmington, Tioga, Pennsylvania

(Name, Relation, Marital Status, Gender, Race, Age, Birthplace, Occupation Father's Birthplace, Mother's Birthplace)

Chester Cady, Self, M, Male, W, 67, NY, Farmer, Vt, Vt
Jane Cady, Wife, M, Female, W, 53, Pa, Keeping House, Vt, Vt
Clarissa M. Locey, Dau, Female, W, 22, Pa, Pa, Pa
[Clarissa is 10 in the image]

IGI film 458814 has the marriage abt 1839. IGI film 962425 has Chester's birth "abt" 1815. Both IGI citations are from Mormon sealings or endowments, not church or civic records.

The Peters Cemetery listing has Chester, but notes "marker broken off".
ii.Abner Gleason Cady 7,22,35-39 was born on 15 Aug 1815 in Locke, Cayuga, New York. He appeared in the census in 1850 in Farmington Twp, Tioga, Pennsylvania. He appeared in the census in 1870 in Farmington Twp, Tioga, Pennsylvania. He appeared in the census in 1880 in Hayes Twp, Clare, Michigan. He appeared in the census in 1900 in Hayes Twp, Clare, Michigan. He died after 1900 in Michigan (prob).
See father Lemuel Cady for the 1850 census entry.

I can't find him in 1860. There is a "Miner" Cady, age 43, in Lawrence, Tioga, Pennsylvania on the 1860. Most Cady researchers assume that's our Abner.

In 1870 Abner is in Farmington, Tioga, Pennsylvania:

Cady, Abner, 55, NY, farmer
Cady, Ginette, 28, Penn, housekeeper
Cady, Denton, 1, Penn
Baily, Charles, 28, NY, laborer

Ginette is Hester Jenette, Denton is her son and Charles is Denton's father. Chances are they are married and the enumerator made a mistake with the surnames, but they could be living in sin. Or, Denton is Jenette's love child with an unknown man, and, when Charles marries her, he adopts the boy. The most likely explanation is bad enumerating, though.

There is an 18-year old Curtis Stewart in the household just above Abner. He may be the one Abner's other daughter, Ruth, is married to in 1880.

See son-in-law, Curtis Stewart, husband of Ruth, for Abner's 1880 census entry.
See daughter Ruth for the 1900 census entry.
iii.Lemuel Cady 7,23,40-48 was born in 1816/17 in Osceola Borough, Tioga, Pennsylvania. He appeared in the census in 1850 in Sheffield Twp, Warren, Pennsylvania. He appeared in the census in 1860 in Farmington Twp, Tioga, Pennsylvania. He appeared in the census in 1870 in Prairie, Bates, Missouri. He appeared in the census in 1880 in Papinville, Bates, Missouri. He appeared in the census in 1900 in Papinville, Bates, Missouri. He died in 1903 in Papinville, Bates, Missouri. He was buried in Papinville, Bates, Missouri - Rich Hill Cem. He served in the military in The Civil War (Union).
Mrs. Stuhr's report says Lemuel is buried at "Pappinsmill", Missouri

In 1850 the family is in Sheffield Twp, Warren, Pennsylvania, three counties west of Tioga:

Cady, Lemuel 30, Penn
Cady, Camehtion 26, Penn
Cady, Lemuel 8, Penn
Cady, Ellen 4, Penn
Cady, Latmer 2, Penn (female)

In 1860 the family is in Farmington Twp, Tioga, Pennsylvania:

Lemuel Cady, 44, Penn, farmer
Lodina Cady, 35, NY
Loren Cady, 16, Penn
Jerome Cady, 7, Penn
Lemuel Cady, 74, Conn

"Loren" is probably Lemuel Luverne. It looks to me like the gap between "Loren" and Jerome is where Corneptin died. I can't find a death record for her. I'm assuming Ellen and "Latmer" died too. Finally, I'm assuming Jerome is the son of Lodina and not of Corneptin.

In 1870 the family is in Prairie, Bates, Missouri

Cady, Lemm, 3, Penn, Blacksmith
Cady, Lodena, 43, NY
Cady, Jerome, 16, Penn

In 1880 Lemuel And Lodina Are In Papinville, Bates, Missouri:

(Name, Relation, Marital Status, Gender, Race, Age, Birthplace, Occupation Father's Birthplace, Mother's Birthplace)

L. Cady, Self, M, Male, W, 62, PA, Blacksmith, Can, Can
Lodema, Wife, M, Female, W, 57, NY, Keeping House, NY, NY

In 1900 they are in Papinsville Village, Bates, Missouri:

Cady, Lemuel, head, May 1832, Penn, Penn, Ohio, farmer
Cady, Lodelia, wife, Aug 1840, Ill, NY, NJ

The enumerator has made a hash of things. Their ages are off by 15 years and he has them married for just 30 years. Lodina says she has borne 2 children, and 1 still lives. If that is right, Jerome is her son.

Thelma Conrad, a fellow Bates county researcher, looked up the following for me:

Papinville History 1847-1997:
Page 18: Cady had residence or business in block 21 of Jackson's addition to the original town of Papinville in 1916.
Page 19: Lemuel was a blacksmith in the town of Papinville, MO in the late 1800's. (This was probably Lemuel junior, b. 1843)

Page 59: Photocopy of "Newson's County Directory for Bates County" (in Papinville History) has:
Papinville, Prairie Twp. Bates Co. MO
L. Cady b. PA 1817, P.O. Address: Papinville, Occupation: Farmer,
Wife's maiden name: L. Wilson b. NY 1824.

Lemuel served briefly in the 104th Illinois Infantry.
iv.William Cady 7,11,49-52 was born on 17 Jan 1820 in Osceola Borough, Tioga, Pennsylvania. He appeared in the census in 1860 in Sheffield Twp, Warren, Pennsylvania. He appeared in the census in 1870 in Meriden, La Salle, Illinois. He appeared in the census in 1880 in Meriden, La Salle, Illinois. He died on 22 Jan 1887 in Meriden, La Salle, Illinois. He was buried in Precinct Cem, Earlville, LaSalle, Illinois.
I can't find him in 1850.

In 1860 the family is in Sheffield Twp, Warren, Pennsylvania:

Cady, William 38, Penn, farmer
Cady, Sarah 36, NY
Cady, Jane 18, Penn
Cady, Emma O 16, NY
Cady, Albert 8, Penn

In 1870 they are in Meriden, La Salle, Illinois:

Cady, Wm, 50, Penn, farmer
Cady, Sarah, 47. NY
Cady, Albert, 18, Penn
Cady, William, 7 Penn

They are HH 123. Daughter Jane and her husband, Joseph Morrison are HH 121, daughter Emma and her husband, Franklin Crisler, are HH 122.

In 1880 William and Sarah were living in Meriden, La Salle, Illinois:

v.Simeon Cady 7,8,26,31,53-58 was born on 27 Jan 1822 in Osceola Borough, Tioga, Pennsylvania. He died on 11 Mar 1896 in Elkland Twp, Tioga, Pennsylvania. He was buried in Farmington Twp, Tioga, Pennsylvania - Peters Cem.
The 1897 History of Tioga County says:

SIMEON CADY, fourth son of Lemuel and Ruth Cady, was born in Osceola, Tioga county, January 27, 1822, was reared in Farmington township, and attended the common schools in boyhood. He made farming his life vocation, first clearing up fifty acres in Farmington, which he later exchanged for 156 acres in the same township. This he also cleared and improved, and owned it at the time of his death. He resided on his farm until 1886, when he removed to Elkland, and died in that borough, March 10, 1896, in his seventy-fifth year.

Mr. Cady was married May 24, 1843, to Jemima Baxter, a daughter of John and Phoebe Baxter, of Farmington township, who bore him a family of six children, as follows: Melvin, deceased, who married Elizabeth Edwards; Edwin, who married Addie Upton; Marietta, wife of Ira Keeney; Marcus, who married Ella Beard; Milton, who married Lillian Shelly, and John, who married Bertha Bolt.

Mrs. Cady died January 23, 1894. Mr. Cady was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church half a century, and in politics, an adherent of the Republican party. His life was an example of honesty and industry, as well as kindly charity towards his fellowmen.
