I'm looking for information or family members living in the
Lincoln/Marathon counties area for Claus Bartenhagen. I'm wondering if
any of his descendents are doing family history. I would like to
establish a link between our Bartenhagens. Here's what I know about
Claus from his obituary in the 14 March 1916 (page 4) and 16 March 1916
(page 5) Merrill Daily Herald: b. April 27, 1838 in Germany; m. unknown
date to Maria Schlichtman in Germany; d. 13 March 1916 in Merrill,
Wisconsin. Living children (at the time): Henry Bartenhagen of Payette,
Idaho; Mrs. F. Berlun (Bellin) of Nebraska; Mrs. Julius Pophal of Scott,
Wisconsin; Mrs. Frank Schultz (Schult) of Scott, Wisconsin; Mrs. Carl
Lotholz (Lodholz) of Wausau; and Mrs. Closs Ritter (Ruether) of Maine,
Wisconsin.

I have been in contact with a descendent of Henry Bartenhagen in Wyoming;
the names in brackets, i.e. (Ruether) are from that family tree
information. I would like to know the names of Claus Bartenhagen's
ancestors and where in Germany they came from. I would also be happy to
visit with any descendents of Claus and share the family tree information
I have from the Wyoming/Idaho line.

Check the obituary for Ella Schult who lived in the Town of Scott, Lincoln County, WI and you will find the name Bartenhagen.

Katherine Bartenhagen born April 2, 1867 and died January 30, 1946 married Julius Pophal born April 15, 1861 and died May 30, 1937 are buried in the Chat Cemetery, Town of Birch, Lincoln County, Wi. They were the parents of these children. Bertha-married Alex Draper, Martha married?, Emma Joanne born Mar. 26, 1902,in the town of Scott Lincoln County Wi. married Andrew Peter Fehr May 19, 1923 and died in 1998 Emma died May 15, 1971 and is buried in the Merrill Memorial Park Merrill Wi., Helen Marie Martha born August 23, 1908 in the town of Scott and died June 26, 1996 married October 6, 1923 to John Fehr, Margaret married ?, Minnie married Otto Weisman, Agnes married a Waldburger, there is one sister missing... I cannot find anything on her... Herman Pophal born 1901 and died 1967 married Julia Lochoman born 1904 and died Sept 1984, William married Dorthea ?, Carl married Angeline ? If anyone has additional information on this family I would greatly appreciate the help.

I have a little bit of info for you if you would like it. William Pophal fits into my family tree like so:

William Pophal married DOROTHEA GRUETZMACHER on September 21, 1929 in St. John Lutheran Church in Mosinee, Marathon County, WIsconsin. She was born on August 20, 1900 to August Albert Paul Gruetzmacher and Emilie Augustine Ernstine Wendorf. (I have further info on her parents and grandparents as well if you would like it). Dorothea died in January 1987 in Park Falls, Price County, Wisconsin. William was born June 25, 1906 in Merrill, Lincoln County, Wisconsin. He died April 22, 1989 in Merrill.

"Merrill Couple Married 50 Years - MERRILL- Dorothea and William F. Pophal, Route 2, Merrill, observed their 50th wedding anniversary Friday with a family get-together at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bauman. A dinner party in their honor had been held on Labor Day at the home of their son, Harold, Route 6, Merrill. Louise Gruetzmacher and Mrs. Paul Ahrens, both of Marathon, were in Attendance. The former Dorothea Gruetzmacher was born in Mosinee and Mr. Pophal was born in Merrill. They have lived in the Merrill area since their wedding September 21, 1929. Besides Harold, they have another son, William H., Route 2, Merrill and three grandchildren and a great grandchild. Mr. Pophal, a former town board member in the town of Scott, was employed at Anson and Gilkey Co. in Merrill before he began farming. Now retired, the Pophals are members of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in the town of Pine River."
