My mother was a Jelley and I have a database of approx 1100 from 1658-1850 In the 1600s the vast majority were in the city of London with marriages recorded at most of the old churches. From there they have spread north to Leicestershire. The Scottish branch seems to have evolved from one man working there.
I have to many stories to relate on this message board but Jelleys were transported Mary from Leicester in 1818
Thomas 1846 again from Leicester but birth place given as Mells Park Somerset.
John and his wife emigrated to Evansville 1846 william Jelley and his son Edward both died on the Kansas plains in the 1840s

Do you have a starting point in your search?
Jelley spelt with an e is most likely to be from Leicestershire or London
Jelly without from Scotland.
Some Jelleys from Somerset were spelt both ways, and originated from Leicestershire.

Hi Michele, Glad to see you are trying to find out where to start looking before you go on your search for your ?our family roots. You can get very frustrated searching fruitlessly through census records all over the country. But there appears to be some good leads showing on this page lately hope they are a help.
Where do you live, asyou sound as though you are from either New Zealand or Australia, off to do your O.E.?
Look forward to hearing from you , both before your trip and also if you get any info into the family tree while on your holiday.
regards Kevin (NZ)
