I would like to know if the name Jochum is Jewish. I have been told twice by strangers that I am Jewish and if I am It was hushed up in my family long ago

Hi !

My name is Frédérique JOCHUM, I'm a 26 year-old French female. My paternal grand-parents were born in Saarland and they were Catholic.
I think that some JOCHUM Jewish and others are Catholic.

I am a jochum from France, Alsace, and my father is native from Dambach, a village near Obersteinbach. He had 2 uncles, Aloysius (born 20/6/1860) and George (born 3/11/1862) who went to the USA in the years 1880-1890.

Hi!
This is a long shot since you do not have a lot of information on your ancestors, but I was wondering about the Jochum connection with your french background. I have a John Jochum married to a Catherine Baldis (France) and parents of Jacob born in 1829. Is Baldis in your background?

Hi Patrick !

To answer your questions I don't have ancestors called Baldis. My maiden name is Jochum. My paternal grandparents were born in Saarland and came in France in 1930's.

Happily I found new information about my Jochum ancestors till 16th century !

I wish you good luck in your search.

I'm interested in your line of Jochum's. My Jochum's also come from Saarland back to the 17th century. Mine are: starting with GGG Grandfather: Johann Jochum b. St. Nikolaus 1801, GGGG Grandfather: Johann Jochum b. Kleinrosseln 1779, 5G Grandfather: Paul Jochum b. Grossrosseln 1743, 6G Grandfather: Johann Michel Jochum b. Grossrosseln 1708, 7G Grandfather Johann Adam b. 1649 Tirol...

Interested if your tree forks off one of these. Also, if you can go further back than my Johann Adam, that would be great. My GGG Grandfather traveled to America (Louisana) around 1850 with his wife and children.

I am also interested to see if the german composer Eugen Jochum is somehow related?

Thanks,
Brian Yokum

Dan, I have no idea where you live and your post is over 3 years old, but here goes. "My" John Jochum is supposed to be from New York and he married Nancy Barton who was born in St. Clair County, Illinois. They had 5 children--Charles, Julia, Hattie (my line), Elsie, and John William. John died before 1880 as Nancy is listed as widowed/divorced. In the 1860 St. Clair County IL census he is listed as John Jotcham...Just wondered if you might know something of this John Jochum. Thanks.
