Mine came from Burton-on-Trent and Stretton in Staffordshire. Unfortunately, I don't know anything about family during the 20th Century. The last information I know about the Lovatts in Staffordshire is that an Albert William Lovatt (my grandmother's brother) was killed in WW1.

I have traced my Lovatt's back to Staffordshire. Enoch Lovatt m. Susannah Cartlidge 22 March 1856, Tunstall, Wolstanton, Staffordshire. They had 11 children. If this rings a bell with anyone, I would like to hear from you.

These are some notes about my side of the Lovatt family and some notes written for me by my Aunt about 10 years ago.

Andrew Lovatt notes

My Grandfather was William Lovatt son of Thomas Lovatt and Fanny Toon.
William Lovatt married Agnes but at the moment I have no further information
on her. They had 2 children Thomas (my father b1917, died 1973) and
Gladys Fanny Lovatt (my Auntie Betty’s died 1996). I don’t know why she
was called Betty.

My dad married Jennie Forster in 1948 and had 3 children (Anne b1950, Sue
boen 1953 and myself)

My Aunt Betty married Eric (Clev) Cleverley in 1947 but he died in 1959). He
was from Coventry. They did not have children.

My grandfather and probably great grandfather were farmers and lived in the
Village farm. My Grandfather was a farmer but my dad did not follow in his
footsteps and farm itself ceased to be a working farm in the 40’s or 50’s.

My great great grandfather Thomas Lovatt was elected to the very first
Stretton Parish Council

This is what my Auntie Betty wrote about 9 or 10 years ago.
My Aunt’s notes are as follows:

My grandfather was Thomas Lovatt and he married Fanny Toon and they had
6 sons. I believe a girl died but my Grandmothers brother’s wife died of
childbirth and she (the child) was brought up as a sister. She was Mary and
she married Charlie Upton (great friend of my Dad (William Lovatt). They had
2 children -
1. A girl Hilda Fanny who married Jack Jordan. Hilda and Jack had a girl
who died and then Chris who committed suicide.
2. A son Cecil Upton who married Muriel Stanley.

My Dad’s (William Lovatt son of Thomas and Fanny Toon) brothers were:

1. Fred (a guard on the railways)
Married Amy Bullock (Amy Kirland’s Auntie). They had 2 girls.
Lucy who married Jim Boyle. They had a son Chris who was a Bevan boy
and then went to Nottingham University and has a very good job as an
engineer or surveyor with the Coal Board (always had to go when there
was a disaster)

Nancy, the other girl, never married.

2. Benjamin. (Railway Clerk - in office).
He married someone called Kate. She worked at Dovecliff Hall but no one
knew where she came from or who her parents were. The had 5 boys and
3 girls

Ted - in regular Air force and married an Egyptian - don’t think they had
any children

Ben - married someone called Esther and they had several boys

Fred - no children as far as I know

Sid - No children

Ron - he was in Rhodesia working on the railways. Married either an
Italian or French woman. Don’t know if the had children

Winnie - married Burt Glover and had 2 daughters.

Lillian - married Jack Stubs - no children

Nellie - married late and he was arrested at the wedding reception. He
was army and had a wife already. She had a girl who was brought up by
her parents. I believe she is now married properly

3. John (Clerk in railway offices).
Married Fanny Mewis (???) and they had 3 girls and 3 boys.

May - married Bill Kinsey and had Madeleine and Gerald. Madeleine had
no children and Gerald did not marry.

Elsie - married Bill Fern had 2 children. Norman whose marriage broke up
with no children and Mavis who married her cousin Ken Lovatt. My Uncle
Ben’s family and I think they had several children but their marriage broke
up.

Doris - never married but had Derek.

Owen - married Reenie - no children.

Henry - married Barbara and they had Margaret who married Michael
Christian and they have Neil.

Cyril - married and had a boy and girl both of whom are married - lost
touch.

4. Richard (ticket collector on the railways)
Never married ‘the black sheep’ and my Grandma’s favourite according to
my dad.

5. Christopher (Chauffeur to Lord Ferrers at Staunton Harold Hall now a
Cheshire home).
Married my mother niece Fanny. Had a boy who died and then had Walter
who lives at Ashby and work at the Standard Soap works. Lost touch
since Aunt Fan died. She worked at the Hall. Aunt Fan’s mother was the
laundry woman for the hall and her husband (my Uncle Walter was
gamekeeper). The Ferres family was so poor that Aunt Fan and Uncle
Chris lived in and she did everything for them until they died went Aunt Fan
and Uncle went to live in Ashby.

6. William (my dad) came between Uncle John and Uncle Dick.

Andrew, I will try and put this down without it getting too confusing:
Starting with my gggg.grandfather:
Samuel Lovatt married Allice Pountain 1780 in Burton on Trent. Their children were:
1. John bn 1782, m Martha Hollis 1805; 2. Sarah b 1782;
3. Joseph b 1783; 4. William b 1785; 5. Mary b 1786; 6. Elizabeth b1788 (probably died very young); 7. Elizabeth b1790 m Thomas Walker 1815; 8. Thomas b 1790 m Martha Norton 1825; 9. Christopher b 1793**, m 1st Mary Bull** 1815, 2nd Ellen Meynell b 1813, m 1845 (you know the outcome of this marriage: Thomas b 1849, m Fanny Toon 1870 d 1916; John b 1852.)
The children of Christopher and Mary Bull were:
1. Samuel b 1816, m Sarah, d 1883; 2. Anne b 1818 m 1836 Thomas Langford; 3. Mary b 1821; 4. Joseph** b 1824 m Mary Hodson**; 5. Sarah b 1824; 6. Elizabeth b 1829; 7. William b 1830 m Mary Anne Twigg 1847 d 1891; 8. Christopher b 1836 m Emma.
The children of Joseph Lovatt & Mary Hodson were:
1. Anne (or Unice) b 1849; 2. Ellen b 1850; 3.Joseph Frederic b 1853 m Sarah; 4.Henry** b 1855 m Elizabeth Chance**; 5. Sarah b 1860 m George Brettles 1877; 6. Samuel b 1864.
The children of Henry Lovatt & Elizabeth Chance were:
1. Samuel b 1879; Albert William b 1883 m Jenny (?) d 1916 at the Somme; Annie** b 1887 m William Candy Haynes**1905, Emigrated to West. Aust 1913 d 1940; Ernest b 1889. The children of Annie Lovatt & William Candy Haynes were:
1. Gordon b 1908; 2. Joan Elsie b 1910; 3. John William b 1912 d 1913; 4. Kathleen Irene** b 1915 m George Carson d 1989;5. Cyril b 1917; 6. Leslie b 1919.
The children of Kathleen Irene & George Carson were myself and my siblings. I marked my direct line with **. Some of the earlier bits have not been proved, but assuming I have the correct Christopher Lovatt, he appears to be the common link between Andrew's family and mine.
If anyone other than Andrew finds a connection with any of the above I do have the names of children of some of the marriages .
