Don, Bateman Island is in St. Mary Parish just South of Morgan City. I do not know much of the history, just that it has been the site of considerable oil activity for 30 or 40 years. Why don't you try the Morgan City Archives for info. Good Luck, Paul

I, too, would like to know more about Bateman Island. My mother's family lived in Patterson, but my mother, Helen Mire was born at Bateman Island, I think when the family had accompanied her dad on a trapping trip. Will keep watching for further responses.

Just about everything. But still researching. What do you want to know? It was settled by a lot of family's. One being my gggrandfather John Mills Bateman. He served in the battle of New Orleans 1815. Was given a land warrant for his service. He chose Berwick Bay St Mary Parish to settle.
Through several generations born and raised on this Island a
lot of history has been written and lost to time. I am trying
to put it all together at this time.

I was raised on Bateman island, along with the breaux's,Landry and Lacoste families. George Williams owned the island and my father was care taker of the island. He farmed the front 50 acres of the island and hunted and fished for a living. When mr. Williams died the children leased the island to oil co. And is now polluted. I don't believe mr. Williams would approve . George Williams raised his family on the island also. It was a wonderful place to grow up, lots of wonderful memories!!!!!!!

I was raised on Bateman along with the landry, breaux and Lacoste families. George Williams owned the island and raised his family there also. My father farm the front 50 acres and made his cash selling produce also hunted and trapped for a living. He also had a barge terminal on the west side of island ,across from berwick. When daddy plowed the fields we found Indian head coins . Once a tree fell over and we found jewelry tangled in the roots. Most of the people we knew lived down the bayou in house boats making a living hunting and fishing. I should write a book !!!!!

Hi. Like Ted, I am descended from the Bateman Island Bateman's and very curious about the island. I would love to hear more stories if you have time. 2 questions: 1) do you ever remember seeing an old cemetery on the island? I was told that several of the Batemans were buried there. 2) Was the old plantation house still standing when you lived on the island and if so, would you have any photos of it? I'd love to see where they lived.
I grew up in Morgan City and Patterson, so I can imagine what life was like on that island. I envy you those memories. I am so saddened by what has happened to it.
Regards,
L.
