My #1 & #2 Improvements for 2013

1 - Basic text formatting options for all text entries (just how long will we continue into the 21st century still lacking this fundamental text editing capability?)

2 - PLEASE change the default status of graphic uploads so they are NOT inserted as the profile image. My Aunt Gertrude does NOT look like the 1940 census nor do any other of the hundreds of my kin whose names are to be found in a census image. The extra work created by this silly construct is EXASPERATING. It would seem that the simple flip of a coding switch would make this go away. Please allow members the latitude to select a profile image of their choice IF and WHEN they should elect to do so.

I agree with doing away with the automatic selection of the first image saved as the profile photo. Have the option to do it, but leave it up to the user.

One always has the option to change the profile image to what ever image we wish to use. Keep that for sure.

"Keep that for sure."

Not sure where that comes from. I never suggested otherwise.

While we are discussing the default of inserting an image as the profile picture, it's annoying that one can specify whether to use an image as the default for the first person, but if adding to multiple people at once (e.g., a document image), neverthless it IS set as the default profile picture for everyone except the first person (because only for the first person can you specify that it is not the profile picture).

So, if the same image is saved to ten people, you have to go into the profile of each, open that image, and specify that it is not the profile picture. Similarly, if I save to Joe Jones first, and then want to save to his wife and three children by opening the image I just saved and clicking "save to another person" (that is, not uploading the same image again, as a new one), it will be used as the default profile picture for each other person, even if added one by one - which really makes no sense. Why would the system give me a choice as to the first person to whom I add the image, but not others?

I will stand up and cheer, and kiss your feet if they enact these changes!

On the computer it's just such a waste of time to have to go in and remove profile pictures of documents on every picture one uploads.

If I'm using my iPad at times the Ancestry app doesn't even give you a choice. The only time I use the app is to insert pictures as safari won't let let you choose from the camera roll.

"Why would the system give me a choice as to the first person to whom I add the image, but not others?"

Let's hope that a "fix" for this ill-considered and short-sighted design flaw doesn't involve re-engineering the code to allow that very option for each and every profile during the graphic "attachment" process.

It is the current "default to profile image" that is the problem here. Flip a coding switch and the problem goes away...along with the tedious and unnecessary work it creates.
