Display - Ancestry World Tree Imported From RootsWeb File

Forgive me if this is a duplicate thread, but it's a problem I've just noticed in the last six months and it's driving me up the wall. At some point, you good folks at Ancestry decided to start abbreviating and re-formatting what's imported from the RootsWeb World Connect Family Trees.

I've been publishing through RootsWeb for many, many years, and have never had problems with my data being "cut to the quick" before. Now, however, instead of all the little evidence factoids and footnotes I've compiled over the years, I see just the basics...a few names, a few dates, and no footnotes whatsoever.

As a convicted historian and as a dedicated researcher, I find this disturbing, unsettling, and more than a little bit insulting. Adding unreadability to this abyss of the ages, the supporting data are centered on the page rather than being flush-left. This does NOT lend readability to a descendancy report, folks!

So, two requests: tell us, please, why you are limiting the data? and tell us, please, when we can get flush-left formatting back.

I'm a bit unclear of just what you mean when you say:

"abbreviating and re-formatting what's imported from Rootsweb World Connect Family Trees"-

Can you provide a screen shot?

To the best of my knowledge Ancestry doesn't import from World Connect Family Trees at all.

Sorry to learn of your frustration.

Please understand that this is a peer support board, not the venue to lodge a complaint with ancestry.com.

1) "As a convicted historian...."

First: I want to know the reason for your conviction. Was it a crime against genealogists? Are you dangerous? Does your parole stipulate that you can't operate a microfilm reader? Should we all hide behind old tombstones? Arm ourselves with pedigree charts?

2) "... please, why you are limiting the data?"

Second: examples, examples, examples.

I also have a complaint, but I'm not sure if it pertains solely to Rootsweb/Ancestry World trees--the content is intact, but the formatting has changed. The display of many Ancestry World Trees has changed from aligned left to centered. This makes it extremely difficult to follow a long list of descendants. See the thread here:
http://boards.ancestry.com/topics.ancestry.ancsite/12302.1.1...
I posted some images of the problem on the thread. There has been no answer. We've been thru browser issues and browser versions, and the problem occurs on Internet Explorer as well as Firefox. I called Ancestry and talked to someone who had no answer and didn't know what Ancestry World Tree was. There is no e-mail support for Ancestry. Perhaps this has been answered elsewhere. If anyone knows, I'd appreciate hearing.

I submit my GED on Rootsweb, but it is also accessible on Ancestry, so is "imported" in that respect. I don't know if this pertains to trees other than Rootsweb/Ancestry World Tree. My tree, for example, has the URL http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=SRCH&...
Could you do me a favor and look at one of the folks on my tree and see if the page displays centered or aligned to left? I use an old link, and my tree always appears aligned left. However other trees do not. Thanks.

I've attached screenshots of an individual from your tree on RootsWeb and Ancestry - both appear correctly.

Clear browser cache & cookies, update browser & java, and see if that helps.

Thanks. I've done that. My own tree loads on my computer just as it does in your attachment, and I wanted to find out if it looked that way to other viewers. I wish all of the Ancestry World Trees followed this format--left aligned instead of centered. The examples I posted in this thread show the way many trees appear now:

Yes, I see now.

Your best bet is to post on the WorldConnect board - WC and AWT (should) be using the same code, and you might get the attention of the programmer who wrote that code.

I think I've found a workaround to the problem of info being centered on the page. I'm told that ALL of the Ancestry World Trees are uploaded through Rootsweb--something I didn't know. When I search for the trees on Rootsweb, they all appear left-aligned. When I search for them only on Ancestry, they appear centered. The solution is to search for and connect to these trees on Rootsweb. This doesn't solve the problem of why they look different on Ancestry, but it allows you to view them left-aligned. I don't know how others with different browsers view them on Ancestry, but this works for me.
