My grandmother told me (I haven't yet been able to verify),
that her grandfather, William Brooks, had something to do
with the building of the first Courthouse in Isle of Wight.
I have a photocopy of a hand drawn family tree she drew and
sent to me when I was about 14-15 years old. That was about
19 years ago. Her hand writing says that he built the
courthouse. I don't know if that means he was one of the
worker's, draftman, or major funder of the project. The other
info I have is that his wife was Sarah Stringfield and they
had a son. The son was William Henry Brooks. William Henry
Brooks married Bertha Turner and they had about seven children.
Bertha Turner's father was William Turner and her mother was
Mary Celede Holcolm. My Grandmother is not listed as she is
still alive. If this helps please email me and let me know.

Good Luck and Happy Hunting
Mike

Ps. My grandmother was born in Portsmouth, Va. in 1911 and
it is my belief that William Henry Brooks and Bertha Turner
may have moved to the Portsmouth area after marrying. I have
not yet had the chance to check this out though.

My grandmother Edith Brooks Brown was born in Isle of Wight County, VA on September 7, 1891. She was about the 12th child born to her parents Robert Langley and Edith (Batten) Brooks. She was one of 17 children, with only 13 living to adulthood. In estimating the birth of my Great-grandfather Robert Langley Brooks, I would estimate that he must have been born between 1840 - 1850. Do you know when your Great Great Grandfather was born? Does your grandmother know if her grandmother Sara Stringfield and her grandfather William Brooks had slaves? If so, would the birth records for their slaves be in the Isle of Wight County Courthouse? Look forward to hearing back from you soon

Hey, I appologize for not getting back to you sooner
but things have been rather hectic and I haven't been
able to do much research as quickly as I wanted.
Unfortunately I don't think our Brookses are related
unless my great great grandfather had brothers I haven't
yet found. I have recently begun to regain my interest
in tracing my family and appologize if I gave you false hope.
Having said that I'll tell you that I found information in the
1920 Census records for my great grandfather (William H. Brooks).
When the 1920 Census was taken William H. was 53 years of age
giving him a YOB around 1867. His father William (that was married
to Sara Strinfield) would have to have been born prior to 1850.
I currently don't have any other information on them but hope to
turn that around in the near future. If I learn anyhting else that
I think will be of use to you I will post it here.
Good Luck,
Mike

Mike I got more information to share with you. My greatgrandfather Robert Langley Brooks was born on April 18, 1832. His mother's name was Fanny. She was the daughter of a slave owner. He himself was the son of a English mother and a Mulatto father who disappeared to Canada soon after his birth. He was raised by Mary Diggs Brooks (a slave cook) and her husband Edward Brooks (her slave husband). Please let me know if you able to find out any more info.
