Descendants of James Gillum

Generation No. 1

1. James9 Gillum (Richard8 Gilliam, William "Hector" Gilliam7 Jr., William Gilliam6 Sr., John5 Gilliam III, John4, John3, Richard Devereaux2, Richard Devereaux1) was born Bet. 1795 - 1798 in Buckinham/Wise, Virginia, and died Bet. 1868 - 1869 in Carter County, Kentucky. He married (1) Agness Casteel December 13, 1815 in Scott County of Virginia, daughter of Samuel Casteel. She was born Abt. 1795 in North Carolina. He married (2) Charity W. Bougess/Charity Harriet Bogges November 19, 1853 in Carter County, Kentucky. She was born March 15, 1818 in Charlotte,Wilkes, North Carolina, and died December 15, 1893 in Elliott County, Kentucky.

Notes for James Gillum:
James & Charity staked out about 1200 acres in eastern Kentucky, then a wilderness. they had five children. James died in 1870 soon after the end of the Civil War. He only had confederate money, no green back. The yellow money was no good and it left them very poor except for the land and a few sheep. The first winter after his death an older lady called Aunt Sena Fraley (no relation) gave them food to keep them from starvation. After that, Charity and her children worked and kept to themselves.

Children of James Gillum and Agness Casteel are:
2 i. Maryland10 Gillum.
3 ii. Jasper Gilliam, born Bet. 1833 - 1838 in Scott, Virginia.

Children of James Gillum and Charity Bogges are:
4 i. Nancy Virginia10 Gillum, born March 18, 1853 in Near Newcomb of Carter County, Kentucky; died June 03, 1934 in Mazama, Washington. She married John Sloane February 20, 1889 in Sandy Hook of Elliott County, Kentucky.

Notes for Nancy Virginia Gillum:
To John Sloane & Nancy were born 7 children. After John died of a logging accident, Nancy had inherited about 650 areas from her family , and the land provided a living for them though many hardships must have been suffered. In 1909 Nancy and her six adult children and several grandchildren, left Kentucky in a rented railroad car, with their belongings, and came West to Wenatchee, Washington. There they boarded a steamer to Pateros, a frightening trip, for there was a fire on board during the passage. From Pateros they traveled by horse and wagon to Balky Hill, near Twisp. There they settled for a year and a half, after which they moved to Mazama and took up a homestead of 240 acres. A brother, Robert , and his family, and sister, Charity (Sloane) Cassal, also homesteaded there at the same time.

Wenatchee is in Chelan County, Washington.

About Chelan County
Chelan County was formed in 1899. Before then, the Wenatchee River was the border between Kittitas and Okanogan Counties. Wenatchee is the county seat of Chelan County. It is just about the geographic center of the state, and it is the major city of North Central Washington, all the way to the Canadian border. You may need to check in Wenatchee for regional information about other counties east of the Cascades.

Chelan County is one of the largest counties in Washington, more than 2,900 square miles in area. It stretches from the Colockum country in the south to the North Cascades highway, from the Cascade Crest east to the Columbia River. This is a mountainous region. Bonanza Peak is 9,511 feet high and the deepest known point in Lake Chelan is 400 feet below sea level.

He went to school with his two oldest children- James and Pleasant and learned reading, writing and arithmetic. As time passed he accumulated sheep, cattle and hogs. The whole family worked hard and managed well at Burke, Kentucky. He built a new house and general merchandise store. In 1913 his third child Marion and eight child Richard took their families and moved to Arizona. When his health got bad he sold the store. During World War I in 1917, he went to visit Marion and Richard's families in Arizona. It took 4 days on the train. When the train stopped at El Paso, Texas, he stepped out onto the platform to view the standing army and out of the crowd came a voice "Hello Uncle Newte". It was Dewey Hannah, a neighbor boy from Kentucky. After their greeting, the Army sung and played for him at his request. They played; The National Anthem. After this, he was elected truant officer of Elliott County. He visited the schools by horseback to see who was absent and tried to get them to return to school. He made speeches for laughs and was loved by all who knew him. One Christmas he was Santa Claus at the school, which was at the Community Center. It was trimmed with holly branches and a large decorated pine tree. As his custom was, he went upon the stage and said, "Be quiet and listen to your Uncle Newte", everyone laughed because he had forgotten he was Santa. He only lived a few more years. He died August 12, 1923. Susan, his wife was grief stricken, but kept her children all together. She died at age 68 in 1945.
