The death record for Martha E. Preston (28 July 1941) lists her father as Amos.

In 1860 & 70 Amos Byrd's family is in Greene County. In 1860 Martha has a brother, James (age 5). In 1870, James Bird (15 OH) and Charles Preston (19 KY) live in the Haverstick household.

They are both listed as white, but I'm told that the 1870 census records that we see on Ancestry are actually a transcription of the originals.

There's also a family tree on Ancestry that lists Levi Haverstick's wife as Amanda Bird, and another family tree for Amos Byrd that lists a sister Amanda.

Thank you for the information it provides some substantial evidence to support family stories. The family story said that Charles Preston was working as a farm laborer at a farm near Martha Byrd's home in xenia. They ran off together and eventually settled in Ross County, Ohio. Family stories have Charles as having very light tan complexion, possibly of mixed heritage, also listed as white. I have found limited information on their children, especially Suan and Willie. My mother's father, Russell Williams, was the son of Mary Preston and Harvey Williams. If you have any additional info I hope you will share it. I wondered if any are buried in Chillicothe, Ross Co, Ohio and where.

I don't have any connection to this family. The death record (on Familysearch) for Martha said she was buried in Grandview Cemetery. I did not find any Prestons in Ross County on Findagrave. Good Luck.

Surnames: Doll and Preston
My grandmother was Dora Preston Doll married to Charles R. Doll. My father was their only son, Robert Preston Doll.
Charles R. Doll was an attorney in Chillicothe & Columbus OH.
His first wife was Ada Preston who died in childbirth.
Dora was 19 years his junior.
I have been to Ohio twice in search of Doll roots; many are buried at Grandview Cemetery; have not yet looked for Preston
relatives but would like to know more.

Surnames: Preston - Chillicothe, Ohio
Great to connect. Dora's sister Mary (Preston) Williams was my great grandmother. Her son Russell Williams was my mothers father. My mothers sister was lost in the Portsmouth, Ohio flood back in 1937 ( Portsmouth is 45 min south of Chillicothe. Her picture appeared in the News paper and Dora and Charles recognized her and rescued her, she lived with them for a short time. I believe several Preston's are buried in Grandview Cemetery, Dora's parents Charles and Martha Preston. I hope to visit there as the weather improve here. A interesting twist I discovered this year while discussing my family search with my mother in law. She recalled her mothers good friend- Dora Preston! I have a few pictures of a young Dora, a few sisters and 2 brothers. I am willing to share. Do you have any photos or info on any of Dora's family? You may contact me through this thread or outside of Ancestry at MSJLJ1@aol.com use Preston as subject. Jenny

We recently found estate papers for a Lancaster, Ohio family, where Charles R Doll is the first cousin to a largely African American family (Smith). He handled the estates for their father and sister.

Thank you.
CR Doll was an attorney in both Chillicothe and Columbus , Ohio and my beloved grandfather.
How did you acquire these estate papers? Do they contain any pertinent family history?

The file was found stored in a coworker's family home in Pittsburgh a few weeks ago. They do not include any history of the a Doll family, but do include the a will and list of heirs to the estates of the family into which Charles' sister Nellie married.

Thanks for the clarification.
Because Charles was the youngest of many children, and did not have my Dad until he was 40 years old, I did not know any of his siblings but have visited (some of) their grave sites.
I wonder how the paperwork ended up in Pittsburgh. Did Nellie Doll marry into an African-American family? What will happen to the file?
