Hi I was just wondering if you found a list of the convicts onboard the Earl Grey as I am also looking for a convict on that ship his name is James Hanley aged 24, he was sent to the Goulburn area to work for John Hillas.

Thanks
Sarah

Dear Robyn

Brings a wee tear to my eye! As we see the pieces all fit together! I had a large Family reunion in 1986 exactly 150 years after the earl Grey arrived in Aussie..by coincidence, and the pics and people who attended was amazing. It took years to find Denis, he left a key, called his place Killock Killough Holy Cross in Ireland, we have pics of the old stone house and met John Shanahan granddaughter....Denis was taken under wing by Thomas Heydon who he was assigned to, Thomas liked Denis and gave him the opportunity to expand. would be interested in your knowledge of Denis and hopefully some day we will meet..Email me june@ccimage.com.au I live in Tamworth NSW
Thankyou for writing and welcome Cousin!!!..June

A distant relative of mine was onboard the earl grey 1838. I too would love a picture of the ship and would like to find out what life was like on board for everyone for all those months at sea. The surgeons medical report suggests many were very ill and put on the sick list, including my relative. I have ordered a book "for term of his natural life" by marcus clarke. true account of a convict wrongly convicted and transported. Also would like to find his burial site....

Perhaps this book is of some interest: In 1856 was the book The Convict Ship: a narrative of the results of scriptural instruction and moral discipline published at London. Author Colin Arrott Browning
