I am so excited! I am fairly certain that this is the Ann Whitehead and Abraham Schofield that I have on my family tree. I've had a lot of trouble tracing this Abraham and Ann so any info would be great. I'll tell you what I know:

They got married on the 10 Aug 1945 at St Clements Parish Church, Rochdale, Lancashire.

They had three children:

Grace
Mary Ann
Abraham (he is my ancestor) He was born in 1848 in Stock Road, Wardleworth, Lancashire. I thought he was living with both parents in 1861, and with the mother in 1871, but it was a long time ago that I did this and it's always possible that Abraham married another Ann! Or that I've got the wrong Abraham.

But there you go

Thank you!

I think Abraham's Father is 'Thomas Schofield'

I think this is the same Ann WHITEHEAD and Abraham SCHOFIELD that I am researching. They got married on the 10 Aug 1945 at St Clements Parish Church Lanashire. They had a son called Abraham in 1948 and I can give you more details of descendents if you wish from him.

Hi Meg,
Great to hear from. Have been away camping for a month, thus the delay in responding to your reply.

This is what we know of Ann & Abraham:
Ann is the 3rd child of John (c1789-24 Feb 1879) & Ann (c1795-20 Feb 1879) WHITEHEAD. She was resident with parents in 1841 Census HO 107/550/8 Pg 17 at Newbarn Lane, Castleton, Rochdale. We assume she married and had two boys and died, all within 10 years, as we cannot find her in the 1851 census.
But in the 1851 census HO 107/2244 pg 9 we do have Abraham SCHOFIELD described as a Widower living with the GARSIDES (who we think are Ann senior's parents) and living nearby at Buckley Mill with John & Ann WHITEHEAD are John and Abraham described as grandsons.
So, the only documentation we have of Ann & Abraham SCHOFIELD & family is the 2 census's.
Given that there seem to be many WHITEHEADs and SCHOFIELDs living in Rochdale, all with common names like Ann, John & Abraham we must be a little wary of claiming our Abraham born c1849 as your Abraham born 1848 - although it would be great if they were the one and the same.
But - where do children Grace and Mary Ann fit in? Where were they in 1851 (may have been living with other relatives) Given that we could not find Ann & Abraham SCHOFIELD and family in 1851 census and could not identify Abraham SCHOFIELD born c 1822 in 1861 or 1871 census we are not sure of your advice that your Abraham junior (born 1848) was living with both his parents in 1861 and his mother in 1871.
John WHITEHEAD's will dated 29 Dec 1858 does not mention his daughter Ann or any grandchildren except an unidentified 'grandson Lot' - Ann and the SCHOFIELD's seem to have disappeared

The starting point may be the marriage of Ann and Abraham on 10 Aug 1845 - do you happen to have a marriage certificate? If it lists the parents of Ann as John & Ann then we might be reasonably certain that there is a link.

It would be great if we could prove a link. We have documented a few hundred WHITEHEADs in Australia (and related WHITWORTHs in Canada) but no known relatives still in England (my father corresponded with a spinster cousin up to about about 1955 when we think she died)

Why couldn't our ancestors keep some records?

Cheers
Peter & Diana
