I am seeking information on a Joseph C. Eastlack, born Jan 4, 1838. My mother, his granddaughter, says she thinks he was born in Penn.

My father had a record of a Joseph Estlack, the son of George S. Estlack (of Mantua Creek New Jersey) and Elizabeth (of Virginia) who was born 1838 in Ohio. He was the 2nd of seven children. I would be interested in learning more about your family. Please see my website for more information. http://www.familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/e/a/s/Thomas-...

Joseph, b 1838, OH was the son of my grgrgrfa, Geo & wife Eliz. I have these ch for them-Wm., Sarah Jane, Margaret, Phoebe, Eliz. Frances, and Lydia Ann. First five were b in OH [wish I could fins where!] and thelast two in IA. Joseph is in the family until after the 1860 Fed Census. Then he disappears from all the records. Our Joseph is not in the Civil War enlistment records, altho there is another Joseph. He doesn't appear in the Civil War death or pension records either as far as I can find. I cannot find no IA mar records for him. Anyone know what happened to Joe or Wm.?? Wm. drops off the census after 1850; he's of marriagable age by then. I have records of the girls and their families.

I am researching a Eastlack family in Ohio and wonder if there is a connection. My husband's ggggrandfather is Marmaduke Eastlack. Marmaduke's wife is Abigail Beam. They came from New Jersey between 1810 and 1820 and ended up in Clinton, County Ohio, where they are buried. Marmaduke and Abigail were Quakers. I know that they had one daughter Sarah Eastlack that is my husband's gggrandmother. She was married to Edmund McVey. Edmund and Sarah's son Alfred McVey, eventually left Ohio and relocated to DesMoines, Iowa about 1885. We've often wondered why he picked Iowa to relocate to. He was a lawyer. Could it have been an Eastlack connection that took him there? Thanks for any insite. Deborah MacVey

To: deborahmacvey--RE: relationship to Marmaduke Estlack/Eastlack. According to my desc chart, we have to go back a number of generations to link up. Your Hepzibah Estlack [Thachara], b 1657 was a sister to my Joseph, b 1674,Bermuda.
You go from Hep. to Sarah Thackara [Estlack] [w/o John] to Dan'l to Samuel to his son, Marmaduke, b 1773. My Joseph goes to FrancisII to Sam'l Sr. to Amos Turner Estlack Sr. to my Geo, b 1807 in NJ. As you can see, we're related, but distantly.

I don't have a Sarah as one of Marm's ch. I do have a Ruth, married to an unk McVey & an Ann marr to a Noah McVey. Also a John E. who marr Jerusha McVey. Quite an intermarr fam! I do have a Sarah as dau to John & Jerusha, marr to a Cole. These data on Marmaduke are from "The Eastlack Family" book by John Wm. Eastlack. Could you give me more info on Sarah and Edmund McVey?. Would be glad to share my nine-page desc chart on the Estlack/Eastlack fam. You'll find Marmaduke's stats listed twice as cousins John Eastlack Sr. & Sarah Thackara marr each other! Ah, well.....

Oh, I never could find a reason for George,[Joseph's father] to go to OH & to IA as I never found other fam members traveling with him, [and therefore no threads to follow!] so know how you feel! they seem to be a bunch of loners!

I am also researching a Joseph C. Eastlack, but I am not a relative. I am a Correction Lieutenant with the NJ Department of Corrections, and I research old newspapers and death records to find Fallen Officers of the State Prisons and Reformatories from the past who were forgotten and never made it onto the Fallen Peace Officer memorials here and in Washington, DC. There have been plenty.
A Joseph C. Eastlack worked as a Deputy State Prison Keeper at New Jersey State Prison, Trenton. He was assaulted by an inmate in the fall of 1874- The guy cracked him in the head with a shoe hammer and would have killed him, but one of the other Prison Deputies in the Shop Hall shot the inmate dead.
Joseph C. Eastlack appears in the Trenton City Directory for only 3 years- 1874- 1876. There were a few Joseph Eastlacks in that time frame living in NJ. I don't know which was the Deputy. I suspect he may have had a cracked skull from the assault and it may have led to his retirement from the Prison, possibly even an untimely death. Any information on Joseph C. Eastlack that was in NJ in the 1874- 1880 time period would be much appreciated.
