Looking for information on CAPTAIN JOHN LEE who married MARY MAGDALINE PURCELL at Apia. They owned a coconut plantation. Mary was the daughter of Willam Purcell, an English missionary and the granddaughter of the reigning King of Suvii Upolo, Mataaffa, and his wife Hanna. John and Mary are my great-great grandparents. My great grandfather and 10 of his siblings were born in Samoa. The time period is 1850s & 1860s.

Talofa/Hello:

Bob: I do believe we have a common friend: Eveni Tafiti - grin. I'd just spoke with him and all is well in Utah.

bdleesprouse: Have you any success on your LEE/PURCELL journey? Faamolemole/Please let us know of any new/good discoveries - grin. In the meanwhile, I will check my resources on anything for Captain John LEE & Mary Magdeline PURCELL - I have seen these names because there is a PURCELL descent I communicate with out of New Caledonia... or is it Australia... hmm... I'll check my files.
....

I am attempting to respond to all posts/messages made in 1999 today and work my way up to the present (one day soon) - 2008!

Thank you for responding. We have lots of information on the Lee line; however, not much on the Purcell line. Any info you have would be very much appreciated. We know that the family plantation was lost in the late 1960s because of back taxes and that one of Mary's brothers was to have taken care of it until someone returned but that never happened.

Talofa/Hello Brenda:

Have you visited the FHC nearest to you? Glean the source info provided?

If not then I guess I'll make my yearly visit this Sunday. Or I can have London patrons do it. They know how much I love the FHCs - !!!!argh!!!!
....

Why are there two sets of parent sources for Mary Magdalene PURCELL?

William PURCELL & Ruth Hannah MATA'AFA?

Ned or Neti PURCELL & Salaevalu SIILATA?
....

Unless you have positive proof that Ned is a diminutive of Edward (or some other such name) then I will only use Ned/Neti because I have gone through Ned origins with England and Ireland and all are under the consensus that Ned stands alone - grin.

'Neti' is Samoan for Ned. There is no letter 'd' in the Samoan language.

I am a great-great grandson of Capt. John Lee. I am trying to find out more about my ancestry. My great grandfather was John's son George. When Capt. John left Samoa he came to the states. That is where George was born. His son Robert Dewey Lee is my grandfather. I know that Capt. John Lee had some sons that went to Australia. I am wondering what happened to the cocnut plantation.

I too am a great-great granddaughter of Capt. John and Mary. Our information shows that George was born in Samoa in 1870. Capt. John and Mary did not return to the states until about 1880. We have documentation of these facts. Nothing shows any of the sons going to Australia. They either stayed in Texas, went to New Mexico, Arizona or Washington state. I'll be glad to share what I have and would love to have your great grandfather's history. The coconut plantation was taken back by the Samoan government in the 1960s because of taxes. You can contact me direct at bdleesprouse@sbcglobal.net. Hope to hear back from you soon.

I am a great great gandson of Capitain John Lee my great grand father was Robert E. Lee, he was killed in a mine accident in White Oaks New Mexico. Capitain Lee and Mary Magdaline are buried in Douglas, Arizonz. I would like to find out more information on the Lee, Purcell, and Mata'afa families. We have completed some family history and would be willing to share what we have. We have made several trips to White Oaks. On one trip we met a man that created a small colletion of family history at the old school with pictures and other written information on the Lee family in White Oaks.

To aquadca -- I am very interested in what you might have found about the Lees. I am also a descendent and have found a bunch of info on the Lees. I also posted pictures of Capt. John Lee's parents, James Lees and Mary Pearson Lee from a descendent who lives there in Connecticut where those Lees settled. Anything you are willing to share, I'd greatly appreciate (you can email me mdeweyg(at)gmail.com). Everything I have is on my ancestry public tree, but let me know if you have questions. I have added some articles and such from the local newspapers there in NM/Ariz.
Thanks,
Mark

Yeah, I've got all kinds of information regarding the Lee family. My mother researched it. Her name was Carol Lyn Watt, daughter to Vera Queen, Husband of lawrence L Queen. My great great, great grandfather was Captain John lee who sailed the Somoan Islands and was a merchant vessel stopping in Somoa for mostly coconuts. In fact, i have a war club of mary purcell. My mother has passed away for over 5 years and i was thinking about donating the club to a Museum in Somoa...
