Searching for descendants of Lemuel Merry Sledge, born abt 1801 in Virginia, died after 1880 in Pontotoc County, Mississippi. He was one of the early settlers of the County, arriving there about 1835, he previously lived in Henderson County, Tennessee.

The name of his first wife is not known, children of that marriage were: Eldridge Wilson, Ellen, George, Sarah A., Rufus, Theodoric F., Elizabeth Margaret, William D., Magnus D., Lemuel C., and Mary.

There is a family legend that several children died in a fire, perhaps the first wife did also.

Lemuel married last Nancy Jane Terry, the daughter of William and Permelia Terry (who also came from Henderson Co. TN). Their children were: James William, Julia A., Gilbert F., Parmelia, Charles Fountain, Lewis Calvin, Marshall Porter, Henry Boygard, Susan Ann, Parthenia Pulley, and Camey Alexander.

Lemuel's daughter, Parmelia married James Wesley Tallant, their daughter Lou Ella was my great-grandmother.

I would love to hear from any descendants and share information.

Mickey, I am not a Sledge descendant; however, my ancestor, McCamey C. Alexander also lived in Pontotoc Co. MS during this time period and I noticed that one of Lemuel's children was named Camey Alexander Sledge. My Alexander family lived in Randolph, MS. Perhaps these two families were well acquainted?

Thank you for your response! Lemuel Merry Sledge was the father of at least 22 children from at least 2 marriages. All of the children had beautiful names and it seemed like they had been named for someone, I'm sure most were named for friends and neighbors as well as relatives. Do you know when your ancestor settled in Pontotoc county? Or where he lived before he came there? Perhaps he may have know Lemuel from very early days, and I am trying to find some definate proof of Lemuel's ancestry. Hope to hear from you again.

Hi, Mickey,
McCamey Clark Alexander was born ca 1820 in Cabarrus Co. NC, s/o Stephen Alexander Jr. and Martha "Patsy" Montgomery. By 1850, McCamey was living in Fayette Co. TN with a distant relative, Moses McCord Alexander. In 1852, McCamey md. Mary B. Knox in Marshall Co., MS, and by 1854 was in Pontotoc Co., MS, in the Randolph area. They were members of Old Monroe Presbyterian Church in Algoma; then in 1859, the Alexanders and several other families went from Old Monroe to form the Oak Forest Presbyterian Church in Randolph. After 1860, McCamey drops completely out of sight, with the exception of his CSA service record, although his wife and children appeared in 1880 census in Lafayette Co. MS

I hope this helps.

My husband is the youngest son of Ruby Henrietta Sledge Crews. Ruby's father was C.A. Sledge. He married Julia Elizabeth Henderson in Sept. of 1890 in Ware County, Georgia.
We do not know what the C.A. stood for. Could he have been Camey Alexander? Do you have any further info on him? Birth date etc? Please email me anything you have or even if you have to tell me you have no further info on him. Thank you in advance.

Hello, Mickey: I am a descendant of Lemuel Merry Sledge down through his son Magnus D. Sledge, grandson John Jackson Sledge, and great granddaughter Willie Kate Sledge Chapman. I am looking for the names of Lemuel Merry Sledge's first wife, and Magnus D. Sledge's first wife. On the censuses Lemuel's children by his first wife always gave her birthplace as Tennessee; therefore, I believe Lemuel married after leaving Virginia. He is found on the 1830 Henderson Co Tn census with a wife and two son under five years of age. Henderson Co is a burned county so old land transactions and marriages are lost. Do you know of some way to check federal records to see if Lemuel received a land grant in Tennessee? It is evident that he followed the land movement into Tennessee and also into Pontotoc Co Ms. Also, do you know if the old Pontotoc Co, Toccopola Village newspapers are extant and on microfilm? Wouldn't it be interesting to find an obituary for Lemuel Merry Sledge and Magnus D. Sledge???? Magnus D. Sledge's children by his first wife (my lineage) gave her birthplace as Mississippi, but noone knows her name. HELP me out on these matters.
