software program that will allow siblings without parents

For years I've been using FTM. In the old version of FTM, each screen is a family view and children can be input without any parents listed.

In some cases, people in my tree have known sibling, but unknown parents. For example, two sisters that married two brother, parents of the sisters are unknown. This relationship was no problem in the older version of FTM.

When I tried to update to FTM 2008, it broke the relationships between the people that did not have parents listed. It also wanted to "fix" all my place names, and I preferred the family view from the older version, so I reverted back to version 8, rather than attempting to fix my family file.

Does anyone know of a software program that will allow you to add siblings to individuals when there are no parents listed? I know I can always add "unknown" parents to make it work, but I'd rather not add unknowns unless necessary.

Any thoughts? I would like to update my software at some point. If there are not any programs that will take the siblings as is, I'll have to go through my file and add unknown parents to them. Also, I prefer a family group view, rather than the pedigree view that seems to have become so prevalent. Any suggestions?

I tried this with FTM 2012.

Using a test file I deleted the parents of 5 children. The relationship calculator and chart showed that the children were still siblings. If you create dummy parents to establish the sibling relationship and then delete the dummy parents the sibling relationship remains. The Kinship report shows the brother and sister relationships.

The Family view in FTM 2012 normally has the pedigree view at the top and a family view at the bottom which is similar to your “family group view” If you look in the center of the screen just under the pedigree chart you will see a series of dots. Put your cursor over these dots and you can move the dividing line between the pedigree view and the family view up or down. You can completely remove the pedigree chart if that is your desire.

Hi Curt,

Thanks so much for the reply. I never thought of going back and deleting the parents after the fact. Thanks for testing it for me.

My guess is that I'll still need to out dummy parents into my current file to import the info, then go back and delete them. But that's doable if I don't have to keep them.

Thanks for the info on the display as well. Very helpful. I guess it's time to upgrade.
